‘When you hide the truth from yourself, you keep the Devil’s secret...’

Sarah Kingsmoor has built a successful career as a family doctor in an idyllic market town. She lives in the cottage of her dreams, enjoys rewarding friendships, and leads the life she’s always wanted for herself.

She’s convinced of this.

One spring evening, Sarah stumbles upon a brutal mugging. Her intervention saves the victim’s life. And a series of events is set in motion which will jar Sarah loose from her comfortable existence, and change her forever.

As she finds herself drawn increasingly closer to the man she rescued, Ben Valancourt, she begins to discover disquieting things about him.

Then the first threatening message appears through her door.

When a woman is found on the outskirts of town, violently murdered, Sarah begins to doubt not only Ben, but also the reliability of her own mind. And as fear and suspicion threaten to drive her to the brink of sanity and beyond, Sarah is forced to confront the possibility that her capacity for self-delusion might be more than just a handicap.

It may threaten her very existence...

A novel of relentless suspense which builds towards a shocking conclusion, The Devil’s Secret is the new psychological thriller from the author of Ratcatcher and Severance Kill.

Confusing

Story rather convoluted and confusing. It left the reader with more questions than answers.

"It's no secret - it's a terrific thriller"
By Father Ted
This book provided me with several hours great entertainment and brought back a few memories. At first I was hesitant about the alternating chapters; The 'Devil' chapters hinted at a severely troubled mind in one of the main characters, while in the 'Sarah' chapters we followed the GP's daily life and everything appeared fairly normal. A lot of people are single, in their thirties, work hard, enjoy a glass of wine, have relationship problems (past and present) and find someone who could be 'the one'. I was caught up in both sides of the story and wasn't sure who was 'The Devil' until the very end of the book. Bravo, Mr. Stevens, but surely the author is too young to remember prog rock? Two of the male characters had a discussion about Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator. Neither of these bands would be on the radar of the men in question surely? I shared the stage with both of them in 1970-71 and by my calculations neither of the men in the story was even born. Never mind though, it brought back a few memories.

A fine psychological thriller.
By Jim Gibbons
I have been addicted to Tim Stevens' John Purkiss and Martin Cavalry books, and this one was a bit of a departure. An excellent one at that. I was reminded of another favorite author, Steven King. His recent novel "Mr. Mercedes" was quite different from what most people expect, and I found it to be brilliant.

"The Devil's Secret" kept me thinking and guessing to the end. I was invested in the tale, and lost myself in it. I'll have to apologize to the friends that tried to call me, and just got voicemail during my reading time. Highly recommended.
