Dads - Buy This Book Parenting Book Before the Others!

I'm a new Dad - and have about 20 or so books on parenting that we've bought during the first couple of months of our daughter's life addressing so many different things we were trying to figure out. Then came along this book: How to Have Your Second Child First: 100 Things that are Good to Know the First Time Around. Jeez - I wish I bought this book first!

What makes this book so good? Where do I begin?

This thing is an easy read - and gives you a page or two with the details of the things you need to know rather than countless pages of endless dribble that you might find other books. As a new parent, my time has been pretty valuable, so it's been great to get some additional perspective from experienced parents in quick, digestible chucks - think Cliff's Notes for Adults.

The insight is awesome! Kerry Colburn and Rob Sorensen give answers that are good for both moms and dads. Throw the birth plan out the door, formula is totally fine, and dad's may feel left out at first are just some of the gems we learned. You'll also digest practical bits about wipe warmers, what is best to dress your kid in, and perhaps the best one: you can let your partner do things his/her own way (I bookmarked this page!:)). I tell you, just reading through this book has helped prevent issues for me and my wife before they have ever come up.

Someday I hope to meet Kerry and Rob - because I'd give them a big old hug for sharing their valuable insight which has made life much easier for us. Reading this book was time well spent, and it's a great resource we've gone back to again and again.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book before all of the others. You'll be glad you did.

GREAT Advice For New Parents...

I ordered this book for one of my best friends as her and her husband are getting ready to start trying for baby #1. There were so many things I wanted to tell her about what to do, and what not to do...what you REALLY need to buy, verses the gimmicky things that are just a waste of money. Well, this book takes care of that for me. I read through it myself first, and made some notations throughout the book for her, but there is some fantastic advice for new parents here, and it's actually pretty funny. I would have LOVED to of had this book 3 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I'm sure it would have saved me a ton of money since I probably wouldn't have purchased the tons of clothing he never ended up wearing, or the bottle warmers (among many other things) that weren't necessary.

Overall, if you (or someone you know) are thinking about, or getting ready to have a first child, this book is a GREAT purchase. There's advice from not only the authors (who are a husband and wife team), but other couples with multiple children as well. I know, as a first time parent, it's hard to heed the advice of other people or friends who have already had kids, but trust me, what they're telling you is valuable stuff. Things you think your baby can't live without...turns out they can. Sterilizing everything your little one comes in contact with? Not necessary. And a crying baby is not the end of the world. You can either learn all this stuff the hard way like the rest of us, or heed the advice of this very helpful book. I absolutely recommend this.

I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.

I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.

I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.

Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.

Lots of very practical advice.

A nice distillation of a number of his blog posts into a single coherent narrative. Here were a couple of pieces of advice I found very helpful:

"Making a company is a great way to improve the world while improving yourself."
"Never do anything just for the money."
"Don't pursue business just for your own gain. Only answer calls for help."
"Success comes from persistently improving and inventing, not from persistently doing what's not working."
"For an idea to get big it has to be useful and being useful does not need funding. Start now with a humble prototype of your big vision and you will be in the game."
"Make every decision--whether to expand the business, raise money, promote someone--according to what's best for your customers."

In some ways he built CD Baby while he was on his way to somewhere else. The first part of the book is a portrait of an artist as a young entrepreneur. Sivers' fundamental goal--as he states repeatedly--was not to become a successful entrepreneur. He wanted to be a singer in a rock and roll band and continued to take vocal lessons and play in bands. The very first iteration of CD Baby was just designed to sell his own band's CDs until other musicians asked him for help when learned he had solved the on-line distribution problem for himself.

He details how at various points he had unwittingly given his father 90% of the company for a token amount of money, he had delegated so much authority to his employees that they designed a profit sharing plan that allocated all of the profits to their profit sharing plan, and he didn't come to company headquarters much in later years.

I don't think this detracts from his observations about what was required to get CD Baby off the ground and up to a several million dollars a year run rate.

Very quick read with great customer fundamentals for entrepreneurs

I added this to my list of books to read after it being recommended by Shawn Blanc's monthly book club. Although new books go to the bottom of my list, this one looked like a quick read and given Easter Monday I was able to consume within the hour. What I liked about this book was Siver's open and honest approach to running a business. To him, it is about having fun, being happy and ultimately about the customer; money didn't play a role. It is certainty a healthy approach to have in a business however sometimes I think reality can bite into this approach given our fast paced world of technology and disruption. There were many anecdotes on both his successes and failures along with lessons we can all take from it. For example, the tried and true test of trusting and verifying, to delegate but not abdicate and to make every decision based on the impact to the customer. I don't believe that this approach to business works carte blanche in every industry and idea however there are some great fundamentals for any entrepreneur to take on board with a new venture.

Three key takeaways from the book:
1. Delegation is key in the business (especially when you grow), however, with delegation trust but verify. Furthermore delegation doesn't not mean abdication.
2. If you're not saying "Hell Yeah!" to an idea/approach etc. then say no!
3. Siver's Tao of Business: Care about your customers more than about yourself and you'll do well.

Robert J. Marks II, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the Department of Engineering at Baylor University. A one-stop shop for everything Fourier

I studied under the author as a graduate student, and this book (which was still being completed at the time) was the textbook for a number of his courses. The breadth of topics covered in this book is impressive; when the author says that the book can serve as a textbook for four or five different courses, that's probably an understatement. The author delves into each topic with details, equations, and illustrations that go far beyond the overview that you would expect from a "handbook". Not only does the author detail the academic details of Fourier, he also draws on his experience and past research projects to provide real-world applications that are easy to visualize. The writing is clear and easy to follow, especially considering the complexity of the subject matter.

My main complaint about this book is the misleading title. You would be hard-pressed to find a human being with hands large enough that this would be considered a "handbook". This is not a handbook that you would carry around with you (unless there's a Kindle edition, of course). It is, however, an excellent book to have on your shelf.

Overall, I found this book to be a great resource for a graduate level course. Since it encompasses far more than what could be taught in a single course, it gives the reader everything they need in order to go the "next step" and discover applications and concepts beyind what is taught in class. This book went beyond teaching me concepts and truly showed me the "joy of Fourier".

Like having an extra Bible

I learned much of this material from Marks when I was his grad student. I won't get rid of the books we used then but do plan to turn to this one first as a reference. The homework problems with selected solutions would also make this ideal for a course adoption in one of several topics. I agree with the previous reviewer that there's a lot of material here that one won't find in other books, and that the exposition is superior.

An excellent reference book on the topic

This is an excellent reference book on linear systems, time, frequency and time-frequency representation of signals and related topics. It covers a lot of ground and touches upon topics not usually found in introductory books on "signals and systems". For instance, there is a full chapter on Probability, Random Variables and Stochastic Processes and there are two chapters on sampling theory, including generalizations of the classical "Shannon sampling theorem" and even historical notes, not to mention the application related material. This is not a book for beginners who will most likely find that there are not sufficient details on some topics, as the author just moves on so quickly. Also, even though it brings a fair amount of exercises and helpful illustrations, I would be reluctant to use this book as a textbook. On the other hand, regardless if you are planning to teach or take an advanced course on Signals and Systems, by all means, have this book handy! I was particularly impressed with its list of references (almost 1600!) and a very detailed and helpful index.

I couldn’t breathe. I needed him for air. I grabbed at him, sinking my nails into his shoulders to pull him back to me. He kissed me again, parting my lips and nibbling at me.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’m so sorry.”

I didn’t think he needed to apologize. I kissed him just as hard. He groaned against my lips. His body pushed against mine and pinning me to the wall.

“You deserve better than this,” he hissed.

“Better than what?”

“Better than me.”

His tongue slipped past my lips. I groaned, welcoming the light touch against mine.

“What’s happening?” I murmured.

So kinky and HOT!!!

I loved this book. I'm not usually one to leave reviews but I so very much enjoy this author and her story that I want to make sure that other readers find it and enjoy it as much. I understand is not for every palate. But among the few ones out there with this specific type of paranormal erotica/romance is one of the best! If you have read "Bating the beast" by Eva Lore, 'The Wolf's Girl' by Elinora Lupin, 'Knotty Encounters' by Layla Lewis, you will enjoy this one as well. It's well written, great characters, hot, hot, hot sex scenes and a story that leaves you craving more. I'm definitely rooting for this couple. Can't wait to read the next book and see them get their HEA. Maybe with a small litter eventually... ;) I'm adding it to my fave kinky collection. Please hurry with the next book of the series.
