During one of Napoleon's military campaigns, Edouard Delmont, a young officer, promised to marry Alinska, a Hungarian girl. Back in France, he goes back on his vows and marries someone else. Several years later, Alinska suddenly reappears in his life, transformed into an avenging vampire. She threatens to kill his wife and children unless he honors the vows he made to her... In La Vampire (1825), tienne-Lon de Lamothe-Langon tells the story of the first, implacable, female vampire. What makes Alinska stand out in the ranks of female vampires is that she is not a predator, but the instrument of a higher power, working for God as the tool of Divine Wrath.

This is very unique Vampire story
By MithrandirOlorin
Written originally in French in 1825, now it's available in English.

In this story the Vampire is an instrument of divine judgment. But it is also driven by the common view that suicide is an unforgivable Sin, as a Baptist the idea of any Sin being beyond redemption is offensive to me. But the author doesn't seem to like that idea either even though it's based on the Catholic assumption that that is the case.

It's another example of how Vampires being Sympathetic, Brooding, Tragic or "Emo" is not a recent trend at all, this is within 7 years of the birth of the modern Vampire. And not only is Alinska sympathetic and Tragic, she's still in fact the most sympathetic and Tragic vampire story ever conceived. Varney, Barnabas, Louis and Lestat, Angel and Spike, ect. all have very happy existences compared to Alinska in this novel.

I'd recommend this highly for any Vampire fan, but

(*Spoiler Warning*)

I must warn you, the ending can be very depressing.

Confessions of a Hollywood Stunt Man (or It seemed like a good idea at the time!), by Jesse Wayne

Veteran stuntman Fred "Krunch" Krone, Stuntmen's Assn. co-founder and first secretary, treasurer, said "Jesse has written what no one has ever said or would dare say. It's a must read."

Jesse's attention to detail made this book hard to put down. As a youngster, I grew up visiting the sets watching Jesse work with my father (a veteran stuntman himself). Now being a stuntman myself for many years, it has been a pleasure to relive a lot of those historic days through Jesse's words. I’ve read all of the books by stunt performers and Jesse’s is the best. Great job Jesse! Veteran stuntman Vince Deadrick, Jr.

“If you would like to take a book trip through a day to day and year to year life of a stuntman, this is the real deal. The path is laden with egos, conditions, danger, personalities, talent, and lack of talent. I'm a thirty-two year veteran stuntman and Jesse took my mind out of retirement, and back on the set with this book.” Jack Verbois SAMP Lifetime Member

Not all stunt men are six-feet tall. Confessions of a Hollywood Stunt Man is the thrilling saga of a five-foot-four, 18 year old kid who became a stunt double for Hollywood’s most famous short men, women and children. In an adventurous, daring career spanning 40 years, Jesse Wayne details the many comedic and tragic incidents in front & behind the cameras, including a vicious murder of an 8 year old black kid on a New Orleans film location. When the Stuntmen’s Association of Motion Pictures was formulated in 1961, he documented its history as secretary, treasurer and board member.

Jesse appeared in over 500 TV productions and feature films, in addition to hundreds of live stunt shows. If this seems like a lot, it's because he began in the early days of Los Angeles' live television, when he was eight years old. His most exhilarating experiences was meeting and working with the greatest actors, writers, producers and directors of the 20th Century.

In 1959, Jesse became Mickey Rooney's stunt double at MGM. Continuing, he doubled small men, women, and virtually every child actor in Tinseltown. Jesse performed Fights, Car Work, Stair Falls, Bicycles, High Work, High Falls and Horse Work. Fire Gags became one of his prime specialties. He quit water stunts after the "Julia Belle Swain" riverboat ran over him in Tom Sawyer (1973) while doubling Jeff East.

Jesse also stunt-doubled The Three Stooges (Moe Howard and Larry Fine), Robert Morse, Kurt Russell, Red Buttons, Sir John Mills, Frankie Avalon, Kay Lenz, David Wayne, Leslie Caron, Barbara Stanwyck, Helen Hayes, Harry Morgan, Arte Johnson, Jos Feliciano, Johnny Crawford, George Gobel, Robin Williams, Gary Burghoff, Strother Martin, John Hillerman, Donald Pleasence, Mel Brooks, Don Johnson, Billie Hayes (aka "WitcheePoo"), Brenda Vaccaro, Barbara Rhoades, Pamela Austin, Lurene Tuttle, Eddie Hodges, Michael Burns, Buck Kartalian, William 'Billy' Benedict, Richard Bakalyan, Michael J. Pollard, and Mel Torm and so many more.

Jesse has also performed behind the camera as a first assistant director, cinematographer, videographer, director, gun coach, and just about every other job on a movie set.

What a ride!!!
By Rich Jones
I have known Jesse for many years, and have anxiously awaited the publishing of his book. Jesse is the real deal, and the book he has written reflects his experience and expertise in the dangerous and demanding field of the Hollywood stunt man. During the years I have known him I have always enjoyed the opportunities I have had to listen to him recount many of his experiences, and reading his very entertaining book has given depth and breadth to so many of the stories I have enjoyed so much. Thank you, Jesse, for sharing your adventures with those of us who have boring "normal" jobs and will never know the thrills you experienced on a daily basis.

Stories from a Stunt Man
By MovieGuy
What it Takes To Be A Stuntman in Movies and TV. Good look at a Mickey Rooney lookalike who has made his living in the stunt business. The book opens with a telling of how the fire escape stunts were done in Stanley Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad Mad Mad World. Jesse Wayne relates how and why he got into the stunt trade.
I had read Yakima Canutt's biography years ago so I am familiar with other biographies of stunt men. Note: Since Jesse Wayne was short in stature, he doubled Mickey Rooney, children and women.
Highly recommended.

Gandhian Politics
By Jane Correll
Gandhi explains in Hind Swaraj some of his fundamental ideas on how to obtain Home Rule in India. One aspect of Indian society Gandhi criticizes is the relationship between Muslims and Hindus. Gandhi tries to convey the idea that religious identity does not constitute for nationality. He feels that in order to obtain swaraj, India's people must unify themselves as a nation. By disbanding disagreements between the two religions, with acceptance and without imposition, Gandhi implies that what is important- Mother India- can be saved. Both Hindus and Muslims should stop seeking concessions from the British, begin the swadeshi movement (Indian-made goods), and that a universal language (Hindi) would also help the cause. Another factor which will lead to swaraj is passive resistance. (Gandhi launched the Civil Disobedience Movement 1931-34). Unlike Nehru, Gandhi opposed modernization/industrialization. These views, as well as views about education and economic reform are also included.

excellent new edition of Hind Swaraj
By A Customer
This excellent new edition of Hind Swaraj fulfills the needs of all readers, either for private and academic purposes. Extraordinary is especially the introduction which covers all major subjects which should be taken into account for understanding "Hind Swaraj", e.g. wesetern and eastern influences on Gandhis thoughts, the London & South African years etc. The text itself is issued with a lot of explaining footnotes which also refer on the original (written in Gujarati). It's so far the first edition I know which compares between the english and gujatati text ! The only, minor manko might be the fact that the South African years are treated rather short, but the bibliography and advices for further reading lead the ambitious reader to new sources.

Awesome book
By Swaminathan Saikumar
This book is simply awesome. I call this one of the best books I've ever read. It presents Gandhi's views lucidly and you understand the clarity of thought and spirituality of a person who lead India to freedom.
To all Indians who are unaware of their own civilization, this book also contains portions where Gandhi gives reasons for why he regards Indian civilization to be the best. (I accept that I'm being chauvinistic).
However, this book is not meant for Indians alone, it is for people who wish to be open-minded, who dare to think outside the box, who wish to understand the world, mainly who wish to search for the all-pervading truth.

A Chink in the Armor - A Short Story of Job, by D. Robert Pease

[Epic Fantasy, Dragon Adventure, Christian Fantasy, Short Story]

Blessed by the gods, Job has never lost a battle. He has triumphed over every challenge from man and nature. Arrogant? Yes, but he's invincible. Or is he?

A Chink in the Armor by D. Robert Pease

From Evolved Publishing and D. Robert Pease, award-winning author of the Noah Zarc series, Joey Cola: Dream Warriors, and Shadow Swarm, comes a short story of the ancient tale of one man’s quest for glory, and the dragon who stands in his way.

FROM THE AUTHOR:

The book of Job is one of my favorites in the Bible. The idea that a man could go through such misery, the loss of his family, boils all over his body, friends who berate him, and still not lose his faith just amazes me.

I found myself imagining what happened in Job’s youth to create the man we see in the Bible. At one point God challenges Job and describes an awesome creature that could only be described as a dragon.

Thus the genesis of this story. I hope you like it.

A fun biblical imagining!
By GSMarlene
A Chink in the Armor is a great imagining on what may have transpired in Job’s life to turn him into the man God could test and he would still remain faithful.

I’m not a religious person, but I love stories like this that bring teaching, history, or religion (whichever you prefer) into a different light. This story was easy to connect to with a great added twist of a dragon! Check this story out to see how God might have taught a biblical (pun intended!) lesson to a man who could have otherwise become an arrogant ruffian, sure to fail at the first test in the book of Job.

Well written and fun to read!

The History Boys: A Play, by Alan Bennett

"A play of depth as well as dazzle, intensely moving as well as thought-provoking and funny." ―The Daily Telegraph

An unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form (or senior) boys in a British boys' school are, as such boys will be, in pursuit of sex, sport, and a place at a good university, generally in that order. In all their efforts, they are helped and hindered, enlightened and bemused, by a maverick English teacher who seeks to broaden their horizons in sometimes undefined ways, and a young history teacher who questions the methods, as well as the aim, of their schooling. In The History Boys, Alan Bennett evokes the special period and place that the sixth form represents in an English boy's life. In doing so, he raises―with gentle wit and pitch-perfect command of character―not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today.

The History Boys: A Play
Act OneIrwin is in a wheelchair, in his forties, addressing three or four unidentified MPs.IRWIN This is the tricky one.The effect of the bill will be to abolish trial by jury in at least half the cases that currently come before the courts and will to a significant extent abolish the presumption of innocence. Our strategy should therefore be to insist that the bill does not diminish the liberty of the subject but amplifies it; that the true liberty of the subject consists in the freedom to walk the streets unmolested etc., etc., secure in the knowledge that if a crime is committed it will be promptly and sufficiently punished and that far from circumscribing the liberty of the subject this will enlarge it.I would try not to be shrill or earnest. An amused tolerance always comes over best, particularly on television. Paradox works well and mists up the windows, which is handy. 'The loss of liberty is the price we pay for freedom' type thing.School. That's all it is. In my case anyway. Back to school.

Though the general setting is a sixth-form classroom in a boys' school in the eighties in the north of England, when Hector first comes in, a figure in motor-cycle leathers and helmet, the stage is empty. His sixth-formers, eight boys of seventeen or eighteen, come briskly on and take Hector out of his motor-cyclegear, each boy removing an item and as he does so presenting it to the audience with a flourish.LOCKWOOD (with gauntlets) Les gants.AKTHAR (with a scarf) L'charpe.RUDGE Le blouson d'aviateur. Finally the helmet is removed.TIMMS Le casque. The taking-off of the helmet reveals Hector (which is both his surname and his nickname) as a schoolmaster of fifty or so.Dakin, a handsome boy, holds out a jacket.DAKIN Permettez-moi, monsieur.Hector puts on the jacket.HECTOR Bien fait, mes enfants. Bien fait.Hector is a man of studied eccentricity. He wears a bow tie.Classroom.Now fades the thunder of the youth of England clearing summer's obligatory hurdles.Felicitations to you all. Well done, Scripps! Bravo, Dakin! Crowther, congratulations. And Rudge, too. Remarkable. All, all deserve prizes. All, all have done that noble and necessary thing, you have satisfied the examiners of the Joint Matriculation Board, and now, proudly jingling your A Levels, those longed-for emblems of your conformity, you come before me once again to resume your education.

"Take it, feel it, and pass it on."
By Charles S. Houser
THE HISTORY BOYS, Alan Bennett's play (and now also a screenplay) is about a group eight teenage boys being groomed by their teachers and headmaster to pass the examination that hopefully will admit them to either Oxford or Cambridge University, and from there to who knows what kind of position of priviledge and leadership in the larger world. It takes place in the 1980s (a Pet Shop Boys song is the most current cultural reference in the play), and it is clear that the world, like the eight boys themselves, is in a period of transition. The boys, like boys everywhere, are easily distracted by sexual thoughts and are eager to impress one another and rattle their teachers. The two key influencers on their young lives are the English teacher, Hector, and a history teacher, Irwin. Hector plays yin to Irwin's yang. He floods the boys with poetry and literary quotations, encourages them to enact scenes in French, lets them quote movie dialogue in the hopes of stumping him and winnng the pool he forces them to contibute to, and fondles them as opportunity allows on the back of his motorcycle. Irwin, on the other hand, is a more cynical influence. The headmaster has called him in to teach the boys to perform, knowing that the examiners will be looking to be dazzled by memorable eccentricities rather than swayed by the accuteness of their thoughts, breadth of their reading, or depth of their wisdom. "History nowadays is not a matter of conviction. It's a performance. It's entertainment. And if it isn't, make it so." While everyone seems to be proceeding in earnest, the audience can't help but feel all these efforts are of little use in a world that is rapidly changing. As another teacher, Mrs. Lintott, observes about the boys' futures in the closing scene of the play, "[They are] pillars of a community that no longer has much use for pillars," aptly encapsulating the play's melancholic, post-colonial mood.

Readers should be alerted that there are two distinct versions of the script available--one for the play as originally performed in London and New York (2004/2005) and the filmscript for the 2006 BBC/Fox Searchlight Films release. Both are good and both tell essentially the same story. Bennett's dialogue, as always, is witty, honest, and right on the money. His themes broad and important, his characters deeply flawed but lovable nonetheless.

If you're a purist, you'll probably want to buy the play script (ISBN 0571224644). It includes a 20+ page introduction by Bennett in which he gives the reader useful background information about the changing face of the British educational system over the past several decades.

But the screenplay (ISBN 0865479712) has its merits too. The nice thing about the film is that it was produced using all the principals responsible for the success of the play: Nicholas Hytner directed both, employing the same cast. By the time the film was shot, the actors had internalized their parts and were able to bring them to the screen with apparent ease and confidence. As Hytner's introduction to the filmscript makes clear, the lack of "big-name" stars and his and Bennett's firm commitment to the careful preservation of all the play's best features made financing the picture a real challenge. But it seems they succeeded (a DVD of the film is due out in April 2007).

Hytner's introduction in the screenplay is thoughtful and will be of interest to people who like to reflect on film adaptation; Bennett's "Film Diary" is typical Bennett, full of dry wit and bemused reflections on his unanticipated success. The script itself seems to follow the play closely (and includes scenes that ultimately needed to be cut to achieve the desired length, suggesting perhaps that the financers who ultimately stepped forward weren't exactly always silent partners). The scene directions (totally lacking in the play script) help the reader understand the many time- and scene-shifts that happen over the course of the story. But the real treat in the screenplay edition are the 43 photographs showing the cast and crew at work. This collection of stills and candid shots are clear evidence that everyone involved with this production was fully engaged and loving the experience.

"A question has a front door and a back door. Go in the back, or better still, the side."
By Mary Whipple
Set in the 1980s in a boarding school in the north of England, this Tony Award-winner for Best Play of 2006 is a dramatic comedy involving eight young "sixth-formers" who are preparing for the history examinations necessary for entrance into Oxford or Cambridge. No one from their school has been accepted at either university in the past, and the headmaster is determined that this year will be different. To this end, he hires a young teacher, Irwin, to improve the students' "presentation" so that they will stand out from the crowd with the college examiners. Irwin's goal is to teach the students to think "outside the box"--not to be dull--when they answer questions.

This mission conflicts with the goals of the English and History teachers. Hector, the motor-cycle-riding English teacher, has taught the students reams of poetry, and they readily apply it to real-life situations. He has taught the French subjunctive (though it is not his subject) by conducting the class in French and having students pretend to be negotiating at a brothel. His classes are free-wheeling, often student-directed--taking the long view and valuing education for its own sake. The History teacher, Dorothy Lintott, has taught the facts: "They know their stuff. Plainly stated and properly organized facts need no presentation, surely," she remarks to the headmaster.

As the three teachers and the headmaster perform their duties, the eight students react as teenagers everywhere react, albeit a bit more politely. They banter and feed off each other's joking remarks, tease their teachers, get bopped on the head by Hector, challenge him to identify scenes from films (which they act out), and explore their favorite subject, sex. They are bright, charming, and disingenuous, and their conversations with each other and the faculty are spirited and quick-paced, keeping the audience constantly engaged and often laughing uproariously.

Bennett's use of humor has become more sophisticated in the years since Beyond the Fringe, and he balances it here with thoughtful observations about education and its value, while he also explores the subject of war. He provides additional commentary on his themes by including brief scenes which take place much later than the primary action. The play opens fifteen years after the main action, then flashes back to school days, before flashing forward five years, later in the play, as students reveal what has happened after college, thereby broadening the scope. Laugh-out-loud funny, thoughtful, and poignant in its moments of recognition, The History Boys is theatre at its best. n Mary Whipple

Best play of the century...IMHO
By J. Adsit
I spent a summer in London on foreign exhange studying theatre and literature. While there I saw this play at the National Theatre. It blew my mind and touched my soul. Although I will admit my own bias as a future English teacher - I believe this play did an amazing job bringing to light questions regarding what it means to be an "educator" in a way that connects with us all. Do we teach kids in such a way that they acheive maximum acedimic success, or do we place the emphasis on teaching them literature in a manner that gives them the keys to understanding the world for themselves? To we teach them to understand with their minds or with their hearts?

There is also a darker current in which child molestation and sexual power are examined frankly and unabashedly with no judgements or prior assumptions. Bennett does an excellent job of keeping out of the way and allowing his characters to defend themselves without blurring the lines of morality and ethics. The dialogue is sparklingly witty and smart and although there are many characters they each have a distinct spirit. I couldn't help but fall in love with nearly every character in this play.

I cannot recommend this play any more highly. Buy it, rent it, borrow it, steal it - whatever you do - READ IT.

Generative Trance: Third Generation Trance Work, by Stephen Gilligan

This book describes an entirely new way of conducting hypnotherapeutic interventions through the use of Stephen Gilligan's concept of generative trance. The first generation of trance work, that is, traditional hypnosis that still holds sway in most places, considers that both the conscious mind and the unconscious mind of the client are, to put it bluntly, idiots. So trance work involves first knocking out the conscious mind and then talking to the unconscious mind like a 2-year old that needs to be told how to behave. Milton Erickson created the second generation of trance work. He approached the unconscious as having creative wisdom and each person as extraordinarily unique. Thus, rather than trying to program the unconscious with new instructions, Erickson saw trance as an experiential learning state where a person s own creative unconscious could generate healing and transformation. At the same time Erickson, for the most part, carried the same low opinion of the conscious mind. Thus, Ericksonian hypnosis looks to bypass the conscious mind with indirect suggestions and dissociation and de-potentiate it with confusion techniques.

Stephen Gilligan's third generation of trance work sees this negative attitude toward the conscious mind as unnecessary and ultimately unhelpful. Creative action requires a skillful conscious mind to realize the potential of the unconscious mind. The conscious mind is needed to set and maintain intention, to sense and evaluate multiple pathways of possibility, to properly name and represent experience, and to organize actions in a sequential and linear way.

Review
There is a revolution taking place in psychotherapy that sheds the limitations of naive models of therapy and change. Stephen Gilligan is one of the most important leaders in this transformation of practice, particularly as it applies to hypnosis. His publication marks a major advance in helping us resourcefully relate to all that clients and therapists bring to a session. I enthusiastically recommend it to both your conscious and unconscious mind! --Bradford Keeney, Ph.D. & Hillary Keeney, Ph.D., co-authors, Circular Therapeutics: Giving Therapy a Healing Heart and A Master Class in the Art of Performing Change

Steve Gilligan is the closest I've ever experienced to being with Milton Erickson since Erickson's death in 1980. His new book Generative Trance delivers a tour-de-force of the latest thinking of third-generation hypnosis in a charming and organized way. This is the definitive overview of a new approach in psychotherapy and change work. I continue to learn from Gilligan and look forward to returning to this book again and again to gain even deeper insights. --BIll O'Hanlon, author of Taproots, An Uncommon Casebook, A Guide to Trance Land and Solution-Oriented Hypnosis

I've been doing changework with NLP and hypnosis since 1986.
Never, before this book, has anyone even alluded to the concepts that are within these pages.
This is going to be THE PRIMER for the next generation of changework and hypnosis.
I can scarcely wait to see what Stephen Gilligan will do next with generative trance....well done Stephen!

Makes more sense the 2nd time through
By Brian Cullen
I've enjoyed listening to Stephen Gilligan's trances on audio and the rationale given in this book is clear. I sometimes find the use of words such as "quantum" and "creative unconscious" and the diagrams to be a little pseudo-scientific. However, having said that, the trances do work in achieving a state that is quite different to traditional hypnosis. I'm half way through the book the second time (yes, it is definitely worth a second read) and am picking up a lot more. I followed up on some of his references and the science behind this area is considerably more controversial than the book would imply. Perhaps science is behind the curve because there is no doubt that Gilligan has provided a very fine blend of principles from Ericksonian hypnosis, aikido and other areas even if it doesn't all quite make sense at a rational level. I think that he describes the ego level of consciousness as "awareness without wholeness". That is probably the level of my current understanding :)

Amazing! An excellent book. Highly recommended.
By Gabrielle Hoffman
One of the best books I have ever read on trance/hypnotherapy, and I have read a lot on this topic. A pure joy to come across this amazing presentation of an approach to trance that is well reasoned and offered in a logical, clear writing style. There is so much depth and insight from a master clinician here. I am reading it a second time, and I almost never re-read books. I wish I could memorize almost every juicy bit of wisdom the author offers.

A must have for anyone visiting Washington D.C. or interested in espionage!
By spyzep
First of all this book feels and looks great, I plan to carry it in my coat pocket on my next trip to D.C. I have been a fan of Wallace and Melton's other books - "Spy Sites of NYC", "Philadelphia", "Ultimate Spy", etc. - but this one may be the best yet....after all, Washington D.C. is our national's capital and it is loaded with foreign embassies full of foreign intelligence officers. This book covers the real world of espionage in DC from 1790 through to 2016. I love the easy to follow chronological flow of the book and it's logical layout full of lush photos, maps and even the rare (FBI captured, etc.) Soviet cipher pad and other intelligence tradecraft artifacts. Only the historian and owner of the 'world's largest collection of spy artifacts' and the former CIA OTS (Office of Technical Services) director could combine forces and deliver this book! The perfect weekend trip: this book and its 220 sites to visit plus a trip to the International Spy Museum! (James Bond would be jealous!). I can't wait for the "Spy Sites of Moscow"!

Smile! You're on SpyCam!
By Jacquelyn J. Caccia
This book presents a fascinating look at the spies and the sites they inhabited. There are a lot of pictures which is a wonderful addition to the text. It definitely would be a 'take along' on any trip to D.C. My only 'complaint' is the gray type used throughout. It makes reading a little difficult.

"The poems of [INSERT] BOY have need of the body—desire it and lament its mortality—but over and again they assert Smith's seemingly religious belief that every sound the body makes, every word and wail, is only possible through connection to some other plane of existence. This is a lovely, voice-driven book, singing high notes sharp as a switchblade."—Jericho Brown

"Danez Smith lays down the gauntlet for all of us to speak our deepest truths with more elegance, more ferocity, and almost more beauty than a reader can bear."—Gabrielle Calvocoressi
