A Wet Dream for John Mayer fans that play guitar

I have been waiting for this for so long. A tabbed out version of Covered in Rain. Honestly it is about 7 years too late. But I would have KILLED for this at the beginning of my guitar journey when I obsessively played john mayer 24 hours a day. Now i've gotten accustomed to doing this on my own. But still this book is robust and amazing. So buy it, worth EVERY penny.

With short stories, lovely yarns, and amusing tales Zig Ziglar effectively brings his points across. He has such a "good ole boy" way of telling stories that get to the heart of things.

My 3 main takeaways are
1) Are you kicking your cat?
If you are having a bad day, you are probably taking it out on someone or something else. Everyone has problems, and sometime we have to look a little deeper to find out why.

2) If you want to improve your life, improve your vision
Try to find something good in everything and everyone.

3) Get Motivated Regularly
Motivation is like taking a shower. It wears off, so to stay motivated, we need to be constantly and regularly be motivativated. Hang around the right people, keep learning, keep doing the right things.

A wonderful book to pick you up and keep you motivated.

A Classic Worthy To Be Read Again and Again

I had listened to the audio book years ago but recently purchased this for my Kindle specifically for the step by step outline of Zig's goal setting methodology. There was so much more I needed to reread. A book like this may be written in the future but it's not likely. The wonderful blend of common sense ideas with Biblical principles would be shelved for fear of offending someone. Zig was always sensitive to this without wavering in his presentation of the information. I for one think it's incredible an a reason why I listen to the Ziglar podcast these days. That same faith based principled idealism comes through and it's likely why the podcast is among the highest ranked in the Apple and Android stores.

You cannot go wrong with this book. You can read it and then go back and read the sections as needed to build up the various areas of your life needed. It's a one of a kind book that way. Zig's seminal masterpiece!

I went to the library to get this book for my 12-year-old son to read and write a review on over the summer. He loved it so much that he asked me to buy him his own copy. Here is his review:

“See You at the Top” by Zig Ziglar is different than most reading material in that the main character is YOU. It isn’t an adventure book or action book, it focuses on helping YOU. This book is, to quote Ziglar, “THE “How to” book that gives YOU a “Checkup” from the “Neck up” to eliminate “Stinkin Thinkin” and AVOID “Hardening of the Attitudes”. “See You At The Top” is a motivational book that was written in a fashion suited for helping develop good, healthy lifestyles. It shows how we can help expose the bad in our lives and change it to good!

Before I talk about the book, I wanted to share some interesting facts about the author. His true name is Hilary Hilton Ziglar and he was born prematurely on November 6th in Coffee County, Alabama. He was his parents’ tenth child. Nine days later, however, he died (according to his doctor) but was revived in his grandmother’s arms! He would later serve in the U.S. Navy before becoming a famous author.

This book was well written, in my opinion, and its genre compliments the writing style. Published by Pelican Publishing Company, Inc. in 1975 and revised in 1977, it has stood the test of time. The genre is non-fiction and I do believe that Zig was very convinced that every man can succeed financially and socially, regardless of circumstances. One of the stories he used to illustrate this was about a balloon salesman who, whenever business would slow down, would release a red balloon, yellow or green at varied times. Then a little black boy came up to him and asked, “Mister if you were to release a black balloon, would it go up?” and the salesman responded wisely, saying “Son, it’s not the outside that matters, it is what is inside that makes them go up”.

He goes on to talk about the six steps for success: self-image; relationships with others; goals; attitude; work; and desire. To help explain these steps of success, Ziglar included numerous stories. Some are about overcoming huge obstacles, some are parables, but all talk about the need to be honest, full of integrity, and faithful every day. One, in particular, was very interesting to me. It goes, “There was a young businessman who needed to get his work done for the day, but his little son kept bothering him every two or three minutes. He then decides that he would never get his work done at this rate, so he took a world magazine and took a page that had a picture of the Earth on it, and tore it into many big pieces. He told his son to put it back together, assuming that that would keep him busy for a while, but ten minutes later, he came back with the map complete. Shocked, the businessman asked his son how he had done it, which he responded with, “There was a picture of a man on the back, and once I got the man right, I got the world right!” Bottom line: If you get yourself right, you get your world right.

Ziglar also used many symbols to help further his point, including items such as pump handles, fleas, and biscuits. These are explained at different points in the book, and help explain the chapters themselves. I learned that our life can be changed drastically by our mood for the day, and this can be improved by a couple of steps that are stated in the book. One is how we wake up. We can wake up thinking it is a new day that will have lots of good things in store rather than thinking it’s just another yesterday. Another is how we respond to people. When someone asks you how your day is, you usually are not very enthusiastic about it. Instead, say something like “I’m super great! But I’ll get better.”

I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe that every person can relate to this book in one way or another. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any reader that wants a moderately difficult read but jam packed full of humor, information, and motivation.

The biggest thing I walked away with was THERE AIN’T NO FREE LUNCH, there ain’t. In other words, you have to work to succeed. You can only reap what you sow. The farmer should not pray to God, saying “Lord, if you plant the first crop, then I will work real hard during the next harvest.”

From its title and the author's academic background, I expected this book would be a more scholarly work. I wish that Prof. Stavan had paid more attention to defining and describing Spanglish and less attention to defending it against attack. After all, Spanish and English have been in contact for several centuries, and not even the most extreme purists deny that some cross-language influences are at least a linguistic reality, if not, as this author insists, a linguistic necessity. But just what is and what is not Spanglish? Stavan says (p.3) that it is the "tongue of the uneducated." In Puerto Rico, many highly educated bilinguals mix the two languages on occasion, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously. I recall a Puerto Rican colleague in my university bragging about his son who had just graduated from what sounded like "jail" (Yale). My own native English is peppered with useful words like "tap�n" (=traffic jam), "rejas" (=iron grillwork), and "tostones" (=fried plantains). The English-speaking operator for Banco Popular's Pay-by-Phone service asks you if you want your payment to take effect on "the next labor day." In the 70's, former Governor Ferre started one of his campaign speeches with "�Cu�les son los issues?"
Prof. Stavans, an immigrant from Mexico, is himself is a good example of such an educated bilingual. In describing his early days in New York, he writes (p.2) "I regularly made my shopping..." where the monolingual English speaker would say "did my shopping" (Spanish hacer has multiple English equivalents). I counted no less than six cases in which he used "voice" (instead of "word"), presumably as a translation of Spanish "vox", as in (p.60) "Voices from the English used in Spain and the Americas..." Are these examples also Spanglish? If not, why not, and if so, is the uneducated condition really a requirement? The author gives us no clue as to where to draw the line.
The extensive Spanglish lexicon occupies 188 pages of the 274-page book, and it poses yet more puzzling questions. The author states (p. 55) "[Spanglish] is an oral vehicle of communication," then follows this with (p. 56) "The spelling I have in every entry is the one most commonly used in popular culture." If Spanglish is oral, where did those bizarre spellings come from (e.g., "benkenpura" = baking powder)? Unfortunately, no specific sources are given for the written forms, so we do not know if they actually occurred, or were concocted for this list.
In addition to such phonetic spellings of badly-pronounced English words, the lexicon also has a great many "Spanglish" items that are perfectly good Spanish words, according to my 1973 Simon & Shuster dictionary. Just among the words beginning with letter a are these: absentismo, acad�mico, apelaci�n, adobe, agente, apartamento, archivar, armada, asistir. Furthermore, several assimilated English loanwords (e.g. parquear, aparcar `to park') were accepted by the Spanish Academy decades ago. Exactly what is Spanglish about them?
Despite these unanswered questions and contradictions, I found the book entertaining, especially the author's recounting of his exposure to multicultural New York and his tongue-in-cheek Spanglish translation of Don Quixote, which demonstrates just how clever the bilingual mind can be.

I got kinda snookered by the description of this book...

You see, I read a description of the book that described it as a serious look at the phenomenon of "Spanglish." It does have that (and it is quite good) - but 2/3 of the book is a Spanglish to English dictionary. While interesting, it was not what I had planned on reading when I had requested it from my local library. I just wanted you perspective buyers to know ahead of time.

Also, if you don't have a decent command of Spanish, this book will be pretty hard for you to read. If you have a hard time following the jokes in a George Lopez stand-up routine, you'll have just as hard of a time reading this book because he fills it full of Spanglish. While entertaining to us bilinguals, I wanted warn you before you bought it.

Untraditional murder mystery

I came across the third book in this mystery series at a used book sale but wanted to read all of them in order in case they turned out to be good. I'm glad I did. This book is not so much a murder mystery as it is a character study of individuals touched by murder: the perpetrator, his friend, and the cop intent on solving the crime. All are involved in an uneasy relationship and Wright does a wonderful job of conveying the emotions and thoughts of all of them as they lead themselves to the inevitable discovery of why the murder happened.
I've started the second book and it is equally as absorbing. Wright is a wonderful storyteller.

Superb!

This is a wonderful, near perfect crime novel: a beautifully crafted story about murder, and evil that is perhaps worse than murder. The characters are all memorable. You will not find a more sympathetic murderer in all of literature. The author expertly leads you to a conclusion that is both satisfying and disturbing. Top notch, this ranks among my favorite mystery novels. A must read.

A Great Start

A friend just recently introduced me to RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg and the lovely librarian Cassandra Mitchell. I love mysteries so I was disappointed when in the first chapter I learned the identity of the murderer. But the characters are so well crafted that I was hooked. The setting on the sunshine coast of Canada is unique. The plot is not so much of a 'who done it' but rather a 'why'. The motive is doled out a crumb at a time. This first book in the series has me hunting for the others.

Good if you don't follow Jeffs deer blog but it seems to be too close a copy of his articles. I was hoping for more for purchasing the book but some of the chapters are the same as blog posts, some word for word. I was reading and thought it was too familiar so I checked and sure enough it was word for word the same as a blog article.

About the Author
Kisan Upadhaya was born in Assam, India, in 1966. He was separated from his sister, mother, and father at age four and found himself starving, sick and begging for food on the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal. Soon the bitter cold of winter got the best of him from having to work for food and he became very ill and near death. He was taken to the hospital, where he spent almost six months recovering and was discharged to the Christian home called Mendies Haven Children's Home where he grew up. He came to the U.S. in 1987 to study and is now working in Durham, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife and two children. In the intervening years he tried to search for his biological family and failed. However, 42 year later he was reunited on live TV with his mother and dear sister in August 2011.

With the Help of Miracles......

After reading this book, I am convinced that miracles happen. Although it may not happen all the time, this book showed me that a man was rewarded one miracle after another until he found his long lost family. Through all the suffering and separation as a street child living in Nepal, this book shows an amazing proof on how salvation, care, dedication, and faith can change so much in one's life. Regardless of one's faith or religious belief, it is not a surprise that Mr. Upadhyay believes in God after being the lucky one to tell his story in the first place. Reading this book will definitely change your perspective about the poor in third world countries, and give you an idea of how it is like to walk in their shoes. In the end, I definitely recommend taking the time to read this book.

This book tells of a wonderful journey that started with the odds stacked against a small boy and ended with a man who has been blessed beyond measure. Giving God the recognition for the way his life turned out, Kisan explains the heartbreak of poverty in India/Nepal and opens our eyes to how blessed we truly are in America.

A heart wrenching story that you must read

Kisan was an raised by Mummy Mendies @ the Mendies Haven in Nepal. Mummy was a dear friend of mine. Kisan's story begins with his struggles as a street kid. It is heart wrenching!!! Especially if you have travelled to third world countries and seen the street kids first hand. I have walked by hundreds of kids like Kisan and each one has left a broken place in my heart. Kisan vividly writes of the struggle for survival that street children go through everyday. The book has elevated my urgency to reach children with the love of Jesus both locally and internationally. So glad to read as the book finishes with a rescued child who grew into a successful man.

Useful guide

The title caught my attention. I love stats reports and how media interpret data. And I am aware at the same time how they tweak data.

In this book I was so interested in the Garbage in Garbage out procedure. Same goes with the visual tricks. We are deceived how media exaggerate its meaning. For misleading percentages, I think this one is common in marketing. This book serves as an eye-opener to be literate in stats interpretation. Causation is a new term to me. This is very useful in my thesis.

Jordan makes a very brave attempt in this book to demonstrate how statistics and charts can be manipulated to prove ones point or to amplify any desired aspect. It is a very short book, i finished it in less than couple of hours.

The most common way of influencing the human mind is to mix up causuality and correlation - leading many to make inferences as desired by the presenter. Jordan brings out that aspect quite well. Misusing averages is another common feature - as someone once said if your one leg is in boiling water, other in freezing water, the average temperature is 50 C. The games one can play with charts - shifting the x axis, changing scales or blowing up a pie chart - is also very common and used by many with alacrity.

The book however didn't give me any aha moments, as many times I have used some of those tricks to make my point.

Excellent read.

An interesting premise, ask anyone if they lie and of course they say no, but throughout our day we use manipulation/lies to help us get through the day, not necessarily to deceive but not to offend. This book helps make that process easier with easy tips on how to make the process that much easier and guilt free. Using the statistics layed out in the book you can easily become adept at becoming a master of deception (the good kind of course). Thoroughly recommended.

A great reference source for freelancers and bloggers to have handy. I think the Kindle version might be easier for some.

This is a great pocket grammar book to have around. I am a freelance writer/blogger and used this while proofing my last articles. It helped me brush up on a few things I've been overlooking. I found the reminder about how to use compound adjectives very helpful. Personally, I am not always sure when to use the hyphen for certain phrases. In reality, I forgot the rules. You will be very surprised to find out how much you've forgotten once you start using this book. I have the soft cover book and don't mind using it. However, I think the Kindle version might be easier for some to use. Regardless of the version it will come in handy. (I feel like buying some kindle for a few social media posters who need help...) I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Well, I paid $0.01 for it.

This handy book is small and compact and easy to use. Not only does it come with examples of what not to use but what to use properly. It is divided into sections that make sense, are well organized, and includes index and table of contents so you can find what topic you are looking for easily. If anyone has a dictionary and thesaurus on their shelf, this must be included as well. This book is exceptional for all writers, students, and teachers. As a writer myself, this is staying near my keyboard at all times and I would recommend this book to everyone.

I love writing. It's one of my favorite hobbies. That having been said, there is a slightly less fun part to writing - which is editing and making sure you've used correct grammar. This doesn't always happen with me on things like amazon reviews, but for my more serious work, I really like to make sure I'm writing things correctly. This book has come in so handy for that. It's almost like a guidebook for when I get stuck. There's so much good information in here, and it's all laid out in a way that it's fairly easy to find what you're looking for. I definitely prefer the physical copy of this book to the kindle version because, for me personally, it's much easier to flip around with a physical book rather than a digital copy.

The physical book is really nice quality. It has a nice suede-textured cover and it's a great size - not too small or too large. I'm really pleased with this book and I would definitely recommend it to students or to anyone who enjoys writing. I received this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review.

Pontius Pilate, by Ann Wroe, is beautifully written, imaginatively researched, and intricately structured. Most importantly, it provides readers with a valuable emotional experience: a chance to rediscover and redeem Pilate's famous question--"What is truth?"--in a spirit of humility and hope. A handful of small coins and one inscribed stone are the only physical evidence that Pilate existed. All of the textual sources that mention Pilate, Wroe notes, are "so wrapped in propaganda or agendas that it is difficult to detect what, if anything, may be true." But since Pilate "stands at the center of the Christian story and God's plan of redemption," Wroe persevered in her efforts to discern the profile of his life. "Without his climactic judgment of Jesus, the world would not have been saved. To have a faceless bureaucrat at the heart of all this drama was unacceptable: something had to be made of this man." The book's bold ambition, however, is not blind. "This is not a search for the 'real' Pilate," Wroe admits. "At best, all we have are glints and hypotheses." To learn about her subject, Wroe had to sacrifice most of her sympathetic impulses and shift her concentration to the elements of Roman life that she did not understand. And oddly enough, the passages in which Wroe describes her ignorance most clearly are where we begin to glimpse "a man actually walking on a marble floor in Caesarea, feeling his shoes pinch, clicking his fingers for a slave, while clouds of lasting infamy gather overhead."

Wroe takes current trends in the genre of biography one step further in this eloquent yet frustrating book, offering a reconstructed life of the Roman official who, by ordering the execution of Jesus of Nazareth but otherwise serving with little distinction, managed to become simultaneously famous and obscure. Outside the Gospels, which each bring the governor on stage for a brief if highly charged cameo appearance, there are only a few references to Pilate in contemporary sources. Where other biographers would see a historical desert, Wroe sees the tantalizing mirages that have sprung up over the centuries, from the fourth-century Acta Pilati to medieval mystery plays. She weaves these nonhistorical speculations together with well-researched accounts of first-century Roman lives, producing a shifting but suggestive portrait of an ultimately very human functionary. The writing is both precise and rich (as one might expect from the American editor of the Economist), and the insights into human character ring consistently true, but Wroe's bibliography is alarmingly scant when it comes to historical research on Jesus (who, after all, presents similar problems to biographers). And unlike Jaroslav Pelikan in his masterful Jesus Through the Centuries, Wroe often forfeits the opportunity to show how Pilate's reimagining served changing historical situations, juxtaposing quotes from mystery plays and letters from Cicero with deliberate abandon. "What did he look like? However men imagine him," Wroe writes. Readers who know the satisfactions of more conventional history will find such equivocations disappointing, but those who take Wroe's project on its own terms will find much to ponder. (Apr.)

Outside the meager information in the Gospels, we know almost nothing about Pontius Pilate. Bits of information from Philo, Josephus, and Tacitus and an inscription discovered in 1961 provide the barest historical information. In a most effective and engaging manner, Wroe (American editor of The Economist) uses a knowledge of ancient history and a variety of fictional material, including works that are more theology than biography, and weaves her sources into a seamless account, bringing the reader into the "mind" of Pilate. Beginning with his "ancestors," Wroe shows us the intellectual and social forces she believes formed Pilate. By the time she gets to his crisis over Jesus, we are prepared to understand the fuller meaning of his actions and their potential impact on him and his career. Presentation of details, such as what Pilate might have done after sentencing Jesus to death--relax in the Roman answer to a sauna--makes for fascinating reading. As long as readers don't take this as accurate history but enjoy it for as a well-written, imaginative, and creative portrait of Pilate and his times, the book serves a useful purpose. The selected bibliography will be useful for further research. Recommended for all libraries.

One of my favorite two books by any author

Ann Roe is one of the deepest and most thorough historian who has ever existed. I've bought three copies of this book so far. There is so little known about Pilate but Ms. Roe manages to find an enormous amount of detail in widely-scattered cracks. Very readable...bordering on popular...but scholarly enough to make one pause and rehash in ones' mind every paragraph. One of my favorite two books by any author.

multiple truths

Pontius Pilate is where the classical world meets the Biblical, a pagan European man in the monotheistic Middle East, the Imperial governor over a notoriously rebellious region, and a player in perhaps the most famous execution in history. "What is truth?" Pilate says in the Book of John, a retort to Jesus' claim, "The reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth." I have often thought of that conversation, wondered what Pilate really thought, how he viewed Jesus, the Jews, his job. Who was this man? What is truth?

Ann Wroe must have wondered the same thing, because this book is a 400-page exploration of Pilate in history, legend, and literature. Very little information about Pilate survives from his time: just the Gospel texts, some coins, an architectural fragment, and paragraphs from contemporary historians. To supplement this, Wroe pulls information from multiple other sources. She cites Pilate's colleagues to give an idea about what the life of a Roman governor was like. She quotes numerous texts from ancient gnostic, coptic, and early church legend books, as well as plays from the middle ages, to see how they embellished Pilate's tale. She references film and novels, and points out different locations in Europe that claimed to have a Pilate connection.

All of these sources provide multiple lenses for seeing Pilate. He is a violent oppressor, a sycophantic bureaucrat, a machiavellian conspirator, a man in over his head, a drunk, a blowhard, even a deeply apologetic convert. He's a saint in Ethiopia. Spaniards forged long-lost documents by him. His "childhood pants" were long displayed in a small German town, and, on Fridays, his ghost haunted a lake in the Alps. Because so little of Pilate is actually known, people have projected their ideas, their fears, their hatred, their idolization on him for centuries.

I was impressed with Wroe's ability to weave all these together. She takes Pilate's life, from birth to death, and explains how each text or legend describes those moments. She quotes these sources heavily, though Wroe's own writing is stylish, intelligent, and sometimes beautiful. The book does get long in the tooth in some spots, but whenever a lengthy quote from Cicero about the Roman idea of morality made my eyes glaze over, the next page featured a scene from a medieval play where Pilate steals the Holy Grail. By the end of the book, Wroe seems to take Pilate's question--"What is truth?"--and presents dozens of people's answers from throughout history, allowing us to decide.

If There Was A Real Pilate, His Life Story Exists Somewhere On These Pages

A well researched biography of the multiple Pontius Pilates that have been created in the last two thousand years. The historical record of the real Prefect of Judea is scarce. There is little we know for sure about his life but the author does a first rate job painting a picture of the possible Pilate.
