In it, Hager Cohen traces the stories of the glass cup from which she's sipping, the paper upon which her news is printed, and the coffee beans that gave birth to her morning jolt. In sparkling, nimble prose, Cohen (Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World) recreates the story behind the "object"-in this instance, glass, paper and beans, although the object could as well be a toothbrush or a nail-and people whose livelihoods depend on those objects, a history of how the objects came to exist as well as a social account of the laborers' relationship to them and the consumer's mostly unknowing relationship in the chain. She restores the singularity of the worker by presenting individuals: widowed, 59-year-old Ruth Lamp, a night supervisor at the Anchor Hocking glass factory in Lancaster, Ohio; 32-year-old woods worker Brent Boyd, whose $600,000 harvester is a great curiosity in the lumber community of New Brunswick, Canada, where he, his wife and their two-year-old daughter live; and 26-year-old Basilio Salinas, who owns his own parcela of coffee field in a cooperative in Mexico, where he lives with his wife and three children. Cohen's acumen in focusing on these specific people makes her journey and ours particularly pleasurable; she signals connections among commodities and geography and time, supply and demand, raw materials and market forces. Drinking coffee in her local coffee shop while reading the Boston Globe had set Cohen to ruminating about the links between her, her coffee glass, the coffee and the newsprint of her paper. In tracing each material to its source, she delves into history (we learn that toilet paper existed in ninth-century China), politics and mercantilism (she brings in Marx and Thoreau here), and she and we discern that there is an essence in objects. And this difficult, enormously satisfying book reminds us also that the monetary system created our commodity world, fetishizing consumerism, which strips objects of their identities.

YA. In years gone by, individuals were closely linked to the land and production methods of all the commodities for which they traded. In this well-written book, Cohen moves between such a past and the present as she examines and reflects on glass production, newspaper printing, and coffee manufacture. The narrative begins in a ubiquitous coffee bar to establish a link between liquid coffee in a glass container and the accompanying presence of a morning newspaper. From there the narrative segues to introduce an individual working in each field. Brent Boyd is a Canadian lumberman who runs his business in New Brunswick Forest from an incredibly powerful and expensively specialized motor rig. On a lower economic scale, Ruth Lamp is a middle-aged supervisor at an Ohio glass factory. In Mexico, Basilio Salinas faces new opportunities in an expanding worker-owner coffee-growing venture. As the author follows these people through their different worlds, which are in fact changing within their own spheres as new technologies emerge, Cohen constructs fascinating theories and insightful commentary on human connections with production economy.?Frances Reiher, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

A Story for Everything

Glass, Paper, Beans is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. I have just completed it for the second time. Each time I read it, it opens my eyes a little more to the idea that to everything, there is a story. We as adults are often like little children who think milk comes from a store, having little or no concept of the work it took to get it there. It is comforting in a way to know that I am connected to so many people through the ordinary things of life, and those people lives are complex, creative, and hold a beauty all their own. I enjoyed Cohen's insight into three lives and how they interacted with initial stages of each product, bringing details of their private lives into play, weaving the two together. Cohen's book brings with it a greater appreciation for the ordinary things in my life. I know that people are behind them, not a new revelation, but now brought to life.

An absorbing look at our relationship to the things we use.

I loved this book! The author starts with a simple train of thought and follows it on a sort of quest to investigate the "stories" behind everyday objects. In the course of her investigations she examines myths, histories and philosophies surrounding these things. The book is kept from becoming dry by the vivid pictures she makes of the people she meets in her investigations. Beautifully, almost poetically written, she uses simple language to convey some very complex ideas. ...A book to make you think.

"I'm sorry, Dad. I'm not flying back to Atlanta tomorrow just to handle one meeting. It's completely unnecessary." Emily's hand tightened around her cell phone and she gave Wendy a rueful grimace. "I'll join in by conference call."

Even through the phone line, she could feel her father's irritation. John Michael Fortune had always expected his employees at FortuneSouth Enterprises to give him more than a hundred percent of their attention, and his children who worked for him were no exception. "There's no reason for you to still be in Red Rock," he stated. "It's June, for God's sake. Wendy had that baby months ago. I think even she might have learned how to heat a bottle and change a diaper by now."

Emily winced. She held the phone closer to her ear and hoped to heaven that Wendy—who was sitting in a lovely white glider near the nursery's window—couldn't hear. And even though tiny MaryAnne had been born in February, she'd still been early.

Emily focused on the baby's perfectly shaped head as Wendy slowly rocked and nursed.

That's what mattered, she thought to herself. "There's nothing on my plate that I can't handle long-distance," she said into the phone. And there wasn't. She was the director of advertising for their telecommunications company, and whether John Michael gave her many accolades or not, she knew she was doing her job well.

Business was booming, after all.

"I don't know what's gotten into you," her father muttered, still clearly dissatisfied. "Ever since that tornado, nobody's been the same. And you, with this baby nonsense—"

"People died in that tornado, Dad," Emily cut him off, not wanting to hear the rest. They'd all been the lucky ones, but there were others who hadn't been so fortunate. Emily had ended up with only a sprained ankle. Her mother, thankfully, only a broken wrist. "It's sort of a life-changing experience, you know."

She heard his enormously frustrated sigh. "Fine," he snapped. "Conference into the meeting this time. But I'd better see your face on Friday at the first Connover meeting."

For a fleeting moment, Emily was tempted to ask what the unspoken "or else" was, but she fought the urge. Yes, she was bristling at the iron hand of her father's management, but that didn't mean she didn't still respect his position both as her father and as the head of FortuneSouth. "I've already got the charter flight scheduled to be there," she promised. "Say hello to Mother for me."

"Say hello yourself," he returned bluntly. "She's missing all of you a lot these days, since it seems half her family is deserting Atlanta for Red Rock."

Emily's grip tightened on the phone again. She talked to her mother regularly, and John Michael knew it. Like her father, her mother didn't entirely understand Emily's actions these days, but, typically, she'd been far less critical about it. "I love you, Dad."

"Friday," he returned.

She sighed and hit the end button on her phone. Even under the best of circumstances John Michael wasn't an affectionate soul. She looked over at Wendy. "Do you ever wonder what on earth attracted our parents to each other enough in the first place to get married and have six children together?"

Wendy smiled a little impishly. "Frankly, Em, I don't want to think too much about Mom and Dad getting busy making babies." She leaned down to kiss her daughter's perfectly pink forehead. "I prefer to think we were all immaculately conceived."

Emily smiled, too, though it took some effort. Her gaze fell on the cheerful hand-painted flowers bordering the walls. "Maybe I should start looking into that method, myself." She plucked a stuffed white rabbit off a gleaming white shelf and bent its long ears. "Considering how everything else I've tried so far to become a mother has been a bust."

Wendy deftly adjusted her nightgown as she shifted the baby to her shoulder. "Honestly, Em. Only you would come out of a tornado with a spreadsheet in her head that lays out every possible way to become a mommy. Did you ever consider just trying to meet a man first?" She patted Mary-Anne's back and was quickly rewarded by a decidedly indelicate little burp. She grinned and stood up from the glider.

"You're sounding surprisingly old-fashioned. These days, I hardly need a man in my life to become a mother." Emily reached out for her niece. "Let me take her."

Wendy surrendered the baby happily enough. "Far be it for me to suggest that you won't handle being a single mother as admirably as you handle your career, but I am a mother now. And I'm here to tell you that I can't imagine doing this without Marcos."

Emily sighed a little. "I'm thirty years old. If there were a Marcos out there for me, I'd have found him by now."

Wendy lifted her eyebrows. "Really? Where? In the offices of FortuneSouth? That's pretty much where you've spent all of your time since…forever!"

"I'm not at FortuneSouth now, am I?" Emily reasoned. "And I'm not looking for romance, anyway. Romance has never led anywhere. But raising a child? That's another story. I'm going to be a mother. Pure and simple." Emily jiggled MaryAnne and smiled as her niece chortled happily. "Isn't that right, sweetie peetie? Auntie Emily is going to get a baby."

"Romance for you has never gone anywhere because you've never made room for it to go anywhere."

"I've dated plenty of men!"

"Yeah. Maybe once. Twice if they were lucky. How many have you loved more than your job?"

Emily rolled her eyes. "None of them were anywhere near as interesting as my job. And most were more interested in what I could do for them, than in what we could be together." She grinned good-naturedly. "Besides, I figure there are a finite number of good men out there and you and Jordana have already snapped up this family's allotment of them."

Wendy just shook her head and seemed to see the wisdom in changing the subject. "Speaking of Jordana. What time are you going over to Tanner's office today?"

Tanner Redmond was the newest addition to the Fortune fold, having recently married their sister. "I said I'd be there by three. But I'm meeting with the adoption attorney again at eleven."

"Then before you go, I'm gonna go grab a shower while the grabbin's good." Wendy strode out of the nursery, her scarlet nightgown flowing behind her.

Maybe Emily was the only one with spreadsheets in her head, but Wendy was the only one whose vivid personality was enough to eclipse even scarlet-colored silk. Emily held up MaryAnne until they were nose-to-nose. "Your mama sure found her place, didn't she?" There'd been times when the entire family had wondered if their wild young Wendy would ever settle anywhere.

MaryAnne kicked her bare little feet, her cheeks rounding as she opened her mouth in a gummy grin, and Emily felt such a wistful longing inside her that she could hardly bear it. She cuddled the baby close, carrying her out of the nursery. "This time next year, you'll have a new cousin," she told her niece. "And you'll be great friends and won't ever argue over who gets to play with which doll like your Auntie Jordana and I did." There was only a year separating Emily and Jordana. By the time their live-wire baby sister, Wendy, had come along several years later, they'd both been in elementary school.

Now, both Wendy and Jordana were well into making families of their own and Emily was the odd one out. "Not for long, though, right?" She jiggled MaryAnne as she walked through her sister and brother-in-law's home.

She'd been up and showered for hours already; the early-to-rise habit sticking even though she'd been away from home base in Atlanta for nearly three months now. She'd already toyed some more with the mock website that she wanted to show Tanner, dealt with a few minor crises with her staff at FortuneSouth and saved a bunch of real estate listings she was interested in looking into on her cell. And as soon as Wendy was finished showering, Emily would meet with the adoption attorney she'd been working with for the past few months. If that meeting ended up as fruitless as all the others she'd already had, then she'd confirm her appointment next week with the gynecologist to go forward with a second insemination attempt. After that, she'd head out to Tanner's office for the brief duty-meeting with Tanner and his marketing guy.

She didn't particularly mind the meeting. It had sort of been her own fault, anyway, because she'd happened to mention that the website for his flight school was a little…dry. Fortunately, her new brother-in-law hadn't been offended. Instead, he'd asked her to come in and discuss the matter, as well as kick around some marketing and advertising strategies for increasing the flight school's business. Of course, she'd said she would. He was Jordana's brand-new husband and the father of the baby they were soon expecting, so how could Emily refuse?

Besides, she liked Tanner.

And even though she'd come up with the mock site herself—something she had some fun doing, even though the technical end wasn't particularly her area of expertise—it didn't mean she was particularly interested in discussing business with anyone any more than she was interested in her own duties with FortuneSouth these days.

For the first time in her life, Emily's eye was not only on business. She'd realized what mattered and one way or another, she was going to become a mother.

City girl and scruffy small-town guy, with some baby drama

THE HAPPY COUPLE....

Emily Fortune is the VP of advertising for her father's telecom company, and she's desperate to become a mother like her sisters. Max Allen is a brooding airport manager and pilot-in-training who had to give up the Secret Baby That Wasn't Really His. (Don't worry, that's not a spoiler.)

THE SETTING....

Red Rock, Texas, and a few scenes in Atlanta. Much of the book (and the series) centers around a small-town airport where the townies cross paths with the rich business people who charter planes.

THE STORYTELLING....

A typical rich-girl/poor-boy premise, but with some charming and affecting scenes. The "Black Moment" that drives Emily and Max apart is especially good, because we get just enough of their backstories to understand their motivations and reactions.

The baby drama was necessary to the plot, and the author played their conflicting situations well. It was a little melodramatic, but it didn't quite go over the top with sperm bank mix-ups or other such idiocy.

THE ROMANCE....

Entirely believable relationship-building (although a little rushed), with both characters initially resisting the attraction because of their business relationship (no, really) and eventually overcoming the differences in their wealth and career status.

I usually hate the "pampered princess" trope, but Emily turned out to be a smart and flawed heroine. Max started out as a grumpy, determined-to-redeem-himself stoic, but the picnic scene clinched him as a decent beta hero.

THE RECOMMENDATION....

A likeable couple and some sexy times made it an enjoyable read - but it wasn't enough to get me to invest time with the rest of the series, and I doubt I'll ever read it again.

Sweet romance

Emily has given up on finding a man, now she just wants a baby. But when she meets Max Allen, she decides maybe she can have both the man and the baby. Max is having none of it, having lost one child, he has no intention of putting himself in a place where he can be hurt like that again. Can Emily convince him to try again?

I enjoyed the two branches of families in this series very much. The characters are very interesting, funny, and likable. I like how the family members are mention throughout the series. You are kept up dated with each one.

About the Author
Richard Gartee is the author of seven college textbooks on health information technology, computerized medical systems, managed care, and electronic health records. He is also the author of the novel, Lancelot’s Grail. Before becoming a full-time author and consultant, Richard spent 20 years in the design, development, and implementation of the preeminent practice management and electronic health records systems.

I,m still using the book but for the first 4 chapters it was missing the chapter review questions. That was a problem for me since my instructor left homework problems from it. I had to get them from my class mate but other than that the book has been working just fine.

About the Author
Laura P. Hartman is Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at DePaul University and is responsible for coordinating Academic Integrity for the university. She is also a Professor of Business Ethics and Legal Studies in the Management Department in DePaul’s College of Commerce, where she has received the university’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and serves as Research Director of DePaul’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics. Her academic scholarship focuses on the ethics of the employment relationship with a primary emphasis in the areas of global labor conditions and standards, corporate governance and corporate culture, and the impact of technology on the employment relationship. Hartman graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. She lives in Chicago with her two daughters, Emma and Rachel.

Joe DesJardins is Professor in the philosophy department formed jointly by the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota. He presently serves as the Executive Director of the Society for Business Ethics. Among his publications are: An Introduction to Business Ethics (McGraw Hill), Environmental Ethics: An Introduction to Environmental Philosophy (Wadsworth), of Contemporary Issues in Business Ethics, co-editor, with John McCall, (5th Ed, Wadsworth) , and the forthcoming Business, Ethics, and Sustainability: Ethics for the Next Industrial Revolution (Prentice Hall). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and taught for many years at Villanova University before moving to Minnesota.

Garbage

This is undoubtedly the most poorly written and organized book I have ever had to purchase. The authors ramble, jump form topic to topic, and hide behind the veil of ethics to push their own agendas. It's not worth the paper it is printed on. The index is weak and limited, the subject headings are lacking, and I look forward to ceremoniously tossing this in the trash where it should have been all along. I personally run three successful businesses and we make personal and business ethics an integral part of our daily business. But taking ethics and trying to make it fit a personal agenda as this book does is a disgrace. Buy it if you must, read it if forced, and trash it as soon as you can.

Good information, but could be improved.

This book was required for my Business Ethics class. The book provided good information, but was a bit dated for 2013 use. The writing was what I would describe as a philosophical style, as it could have been written in a more easy to read style. There were also grammatical errors including missing words and the wrong word being used (i.e. “form” instead of “from”). The editing needs work. The information was repeated over and over, which is good in order to retain the information, but much of the text could have been condensed or removed.
