Michael C. Koester, MD, ATC, FAAP, is a board-certified sports medicine specialist with more than 20 years of experience in the evaluation and treatment of sports-related injuries and conditions. In addition to being a sports medicine physician, he is a certified athletic trainer and a member of the writing committee for NATA certification exams. He earned his BS in athletic training from the University of Nevada in 1992 and then went on to obtain his MD from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1996. A sports medicine fellowship followed at Vanderbilt University, and he most recently became board certified in 2006. His areas of expertise in the active adult population are knee and shoulder injuries.

Olusegun Obasanjo, soldier, statesman, author and farmer was born in Ibogun-Olaogun in what was then Abeokuta Province of 1930s colonial Nigeria. His career in the Nigerian Army would see him serve in the UN Peacekeeping Mission to the Congo in 1961, see him rise to the position of General Officer Commanding the 3rd Marine Commando Division of the Nigerian Army during the Civil War, and culminate in his appointment of Head of State, and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
He handed over power to a democratically-elected civilian administration in 1979 and retired to a life of farming. As a statesman he was called upon by the international community, in one instance to serve as co-chair of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons' Group constituted to work on negotiated settlement for the ending of the South African Apartheid policy in 1985. He was also a candidate for the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1991. A fearless critic of bad government, he was jailed from 1995-1998 by the Abacha government.
Obasanjo was sworn-in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian on May 29 1999.
He stepped down from the presidency in 2007 at the end of his second term and returned to his farm. He is currently the chief promoter of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
Olusegun Obasanjo has authored several books, significant amongst them, My Command, about his experiences in the Nigerian Civil War; Not My Will, about his service to the nation as Military Head of State; This Animal Called Man, a philosophical reflection on the nature of man written during his time as a political prisoner; and Nzeogwu, about his friend and key figure in the January 1966 coup.

Interesting Read.

Contains a lot of new materials, a lot of insights into what goes on at the seat of power. Touches frankly on what has become Nigeria's worst enemy: a thoroughly corrupt system of government/governance.
Could have made a more engaging reading without the boring repetition of several speeches/addresses. Was silent on the author's socialization with the felon, Bode George, after the latter's release from prison.

Grade 6-9 - Essentially a graphic novel without the graphics, this book (the first of five) should have broad appeal to readers who love computer games and Japanese anime. As the story begins, five orphans, being raised as foster brothers and Buddhist monks in 17th-century China, are hiding in a large water jar as imperial forces, led by their renegade older brother, Ying, attack and slaughter their temple's residents. Grandmaster has given the boys animal names and has trained each of them in a martial-arts style related to his titular animal's strengths. He intends the five to escape, even if everyone else dies. Fu - the "tiger" - is this book's main character; in addition to remaining free, he is determined to reclaim the valuable ancient training scrolls that Ying has taken from the temple. Fu finds friends in unexpected places and learns to control the impulses he has fought against all of his life. Teens are likely to warm to the implicit theme that each person has a particular destiny, an inborn sense of identity that must be brought to light. While quite a page-turner, employing slapstick humor from time to time in true manga style, Tiger is nonetheless an adventure story and not a more serious work of finding one's self and one's place in the world. As the book begins, the boys are hidden in a water barrel during a raid on their temple. The emperor's army, under the command of their former brother, Ying, the Eagle, is out to destroy the Cangzhen Monastery, kill the grandmaster, and steal the sacred scrolls. Impetuous Fu rescues the scrolls, but his own rash act leads to imprisonment in a remote village. Although set in 1650 China, this is a kung fu novel, not historical fiction, and despite the grandmaster's peace-seeking Buddhist philosophy, Tiger is not for the squeamish, as Ying is a terrifying villain and "bloodstained flesh dangles" during violent battles. Characters are virtuous or evil, but the slam-bang, pedal-to-the-metal adventure stands a good chance of luring kids away from video games; they will definitely line up for the forthcoming sequel. Fantastic Debut

I bought TIGER for my eight-year-old son, and he absolutely loved it. So far, his reading tastes have included the Bionicle books, Lemony Snicket's novels, Magic Tree House adventures, and the old Boxcar Children series, but in the Five Ancestors, he's found a new favorite. This was the first book my son read from cover to cover, on his own, in the space of eight hours. He was so absorbed in reading TIGER that he barely wanted to stop for food or bathroom breaks. We're so excited to have discovered Jeff Stone!

An Action Packed Kung Fu Adventure

Cangzhen Temple is one of the most renowned temples in China and home to five unique teens. Each is the master of a particular style of Kung Fu and their skills are put to the test when their Temple is destroyed by Ying, a former student of the temple. This is the first of a planned five book series and follows Fu, master of the tiger style of Kung Fu, as he attempts to find a way to defeat Ying and get the 5 scrolls of ancient Kung Fu wisdom that Ying now has. Fu is a ferocious fighter and has an equally volcanic temper. The action starts quickly, grabbing the read from page one, and runs throughout this book. Readers will be hard-pressed not to want to immediately pick-up Monkey the second book in the series.

Whew! Exciting!

Tiger, Jeff Stone's children's adventure story, is the first of a series about five young warrior monks in 17th century China.

The cover has a powerful illustration and raised lettering of the Chinese characters for tiger. It's a "wow" book from the cover to the too-quick ending.

Author Stone paints some amazingly clear pictures of these young monks and their kung fu fighting. I felt like I was in the midst of every fight, and in every perilous predicament.

Fu, also known as Tiger, is 12 years old, like his four monk brothers. They survive an attack on their secret temple by an evil 16-year-old monk. When Tiger and the other young monks realize that everyone has been massacred, they know they must hunt down and regain possession of the temple's scrolls. Why? The scrolls contained special kung fu fighting techniques only known to those monks.

Each monk takes on the persona of his corresponding animal, and future books in the series will be called Crane, Monkey, Dragon and Snake. Young readers will enjoy the energetic fight scenes, the young monk's cunning, and most of all, their commitment to each other and their grandmaster.

Children who are involved in the martial arts will immediately become fans and will love every moment in this page-turning book. I can't wait for the next one due in September 2005.

Warning from this reviewer: It's been eons since I've read to a child, or been involved in their video games, so I don't know what level of violence is acceptable. I was a bit taken aback by the graphic violence in the book. It is geared to 8-to-12-year olds but I think it should be 10-12.

Great Review Book

This book has all the inside information on studying for the PRAXIS II Music test. It would give anyone who has gone through a music education degree a great means of reviewing for the test prior to taking it, and with its level of detail it might even allow some who have not gone through dozens of classes on this material recently to pass the test! This covered every section of the exam, including both information one would need to know, information on the exam, and test-taking strategies. Each section was detailed, but not overwhelmingly so, and all sections were easy to find and well organized. This book is laid out such that someone could study simply by taking the sections in order and going through them. I found the practice questions to be comparable to those in other books, and the explanations were clear and well-written, which allowed me to understand and learn from my mistakes. The explanations were concise, which I appreciated since it meant I could spend less time correcting my practice tests and more time reviewing material. I think the book was well-suited to its target audience (music majors and those preparing to be music teachers) in terms of reading level and organization - I never had trouble finding anything in all my time using this. The book was well-formatted and well-bound, and it has held up to much abuse as I tote it everywhere while studying. I would recommend this as a first-line study aid for anyone taking this test.

I do think this product could be improved immensely by providing a list of composers/famous compositions to learn and become familiar with in addition to everything else it includes. Good review book

This is a very helpful book for preparing for Praxis II. I am using it with a graduate review course that I am teaching. Problem with the test is that there's such a vast amount of material to know, it's difficult to put it all into one book. But this at least gets the students thinking in the right direction for what they will be expected to know.

Zeal and Courage

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I would have given it 5 stars except for one thing. Because Begin told the story from incident to incident or issue to issue, I couldn't follow the chronology of what happened in the right sequences. Still, I was able to follow the amazing process of how the Irgun, against unbelievable odds, emerged victorious. I was not aware of how divided the Jewish people were on how to relate to the British, but when have the Jews agreed about anything? This book made me appreciate the zeal and courage of a small minority of people could affect the whole world for generations to come. I highly recommend this book for all who want to know why Israel is the amazing country it is.

I read this twice. It is Menachem Begin's autobiography of what happened when he was commander of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, “Etzel”. Emotional and controversial, it helps dispel some of the rumors surrounding the armed resistance that the Jews had against the British in British mandated Palestine in the 1940s. For example, the fighters did NOT hide in the mountains as did Judah the Maccabee and his men, but lived at home. Begin literally lived underground during part of this time.

Not everybody will agree with what Begin writes. One old Israeli told me in 1979 that he caused many problems. I did not argue with him.

Read this for a personalized view of this time in Jewish history, written by one of its chief figures.

It details the opposition of the main Zionist leaders of Palestine Jews to armed insurrection. It details how prescient determined brave men overcame incredible odds to achieve results that could not have been achieved any other way. The establishment of the State of Israel could not have been achieved without the efforts of the Irgun and the foresight of the brilliant founder Vladimir Jabotinsky.

NOT MUCH INSIGHT

The book is actually too succinct; therefore not inputting much on how to actually develop the skills needed to effectively speed read and with comprehension. The information is too general. There is very little information to assist one in developing good speed reading techniques. I didn't learn much, if any at all; since I have read other author's materials that are definitely more informative and beneficial. The book actually has just about the same information as the other books introduced in the book subsequent to the speed reading chapters.

Read faster and with better comprehension and retention

I've always been a super fast reader anyway, but sometimes my retention isn't the greatest because I'm just skimming the book. I thought this might help me improve my speed while help me retain more of what I've read, and on that score it delivers. It talks about stuff I hadn't considered, like common hindrances to effective speed reading, and sub vocalization which I am guilty of but had no idea it could actually affect my reading. The advice offered is clear and concise and easy to implement. Lots of useful information packed into this short guide!

This book covered a bunch of techniques to improve the speed of reading. I started implementing them right away and the book gave step by step instructions on how to use each concept.

I doubled my reading speed the first day while keeping my comprehension around the same. Looking forward to seeing what I can max out at over time.

The book was laid out well, and was written in a way that allowed the reader to understand and use the ideas easily. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Interesting read

This book is more a collection stories of duels through history. It has some illustration of various swords and pages with wood cut prints showing duels, armor, weapons etc... It really fills a niche in actual descriptions of combat (typically written in the 3rd person).

There are occasional references in other languages, such as French, which presents difficulty as I don't speak/read/write French. And there is a fair bit of old english writing. These are the only reason I didn't rate this book a 5.

If you are looking for a book with a focus on actual combat vice technique then this is probably what your are looking for.

About the Author
Natalie Standiford is the author of How to Say Good-Bye in Robot, Confessions of the Sullivan Sisters, The Secret Tree, The Boy on the Bridge, and Switched at Birthday. She is originally from Maryland, but now lives in New York City and plays in the all-YA-author band Tiger Beat.

Adorable middlegrade novel

I am a huge fan of Natalie Standiford's and have been since I read her YA novel How to Stay Goodbye in Robot. Lately she's been writing more MG than YA, but they're still amazing. This one is no exception.

I feel so awful for Claire: she's the only girl in her elementary school. (Okay, it's not as bad as it would be if you were the only girl in high school or, even worse, middle school. But still---awkward!)

And it doesn't help that it's the age where most guys treat her like she's got some sort of disease, even Henry (her other best friend).

This book is still completely adorable and very, very fun. (AND there's a mystery about a local legend named Smuggler Joe who may or may not have left treasure around.)

Highly recommended.

{My Thoughts} – Some of the best books I have read have been written in a diary/ letter style. Claire begins by writing a letter to her friend Bess that moved to California. Each chapter is a new letter that she writes to her friend.

I enjoyed getting to learn Claire and her personality. I also liked how the boys in the story were so different from her that it made sense they would all clash. How could they not? Claire ends up being the only girl in her entire school this year, she wouldn’t have been alone except that Bess had moved. The things that happen when you are the only girl in school can become unreal. Some of the boys that were her friends, stopped being her friends, others started to treat her worse and worse.

Why do you think the boys were treating her so different? What kind of feelings do you think she would have been dealing with? Do you think that it’s really possible she’d be the only girl in her school? Is she the only young girl mentioned in the entire book? Are the perks to being the only girl in school? So many questions and they all get answered as your reading the book.

I think that any child would enjoy this book. It has an interesting take on what would happen if one would find themselves as the only girl in school. Claire had a lot of ups and downs within the book and I think that the ways in which she handled situations was appropriate for her age. I do wish that she would have been more open with her teachers but seeing it from a child’s point of view you can understand why she wasn’t as open as she could have been.

I didn’t like how the book started as a letter Claire was writing to Bess and then in a few it had her replying to some of Bess’ letters. I don’t understand why it is like that in the beginning of the book, but it didn’t stay that way throughout the book. I think had it stayed that way it would have made the book a bit more interesting. However, if it weren’t going to stay that way maybe it shouldn’t have started that way? I don’t know for sure.

A fun story for the whole family

While I have never read this authors' works in the past I have to say that if her other works are as strong as this, I will be reading all of them. What was fun about this book, especially for my girls, was how strange of a situation that the main character was in. You see Claire is the only girl in her elementary school which is odd at the offset, but becomes fun, funny and adorable in the end. On top of this the story also has a great mystery about a cool character/legend named Smuggler Joe which makes the story even more fun for the whole family!
