Albert DeBenedictis was born and raised in New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern University in Pennsylvania. He has spent many years researching the study of origins in an attempt to understand both sides of the issue. It has been important to him to present the evidence and arguments of the opposing views equally without the bias normally associated with such discussions.

Pure facts and no bias

Read the book and loved it. It is very fact based and provides many cross references and notes. Each chapter compares different arguments for creationism and evolution but does so without bias. There are in depth scientific explanations and details in every point. Clearly a well researched book. Reminded me a lot of "The Universe In a Nutshell" by Hawking...but with more facts and references.

Whichever side of the aisle you are own, this book provides a plethora of information and talking points. If you are undecided, Evolution or Creation, this book will give you all the information you need to make a decision.

Compare DeBenedictis' discussion of the sea cucumber on page 275 of "Evolution or Creation?" and pages 139-140 of "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry Coyne, published in 2009. Substantially all of the two discussions about sea cucumbers are identical. At first I thought that Coyne was an invited contributor to DeBenedictis' book. But if he was not, then how does DeBenedictis explain this duplication, and how many more such examples exist in his book? Who is the REAL author of this book?

Ann Kolsrud began her life in an insidious darkness under the roof of absent, neglectful parents, and struggles with her own inadequacies to make friends and be a part of society. Suddenly, she is living a life of riches as well as lies. Disgusted by the perversions she is forced (and paid) to endure, Ann seeks an escape and finds herself in a relationship with a woman whom she loves, though she is still dependent financially and emotionally upon the psychiatrist-lover, a relationship that drives her back to a world of insanity. Eventually, she leaves the psychiatrist and is helped by a new miracle drug, but after a small amount of success, the drug began to cause crippling arthritis and seizures. During this time she is told that her physical problems are all in her head. Taking it upon herself to make a change in medications, Ann slowly begins to die, not only from the physical but mental illnesses which continue to consume her. After reaching her lowest point -- which include debilitating medications and electric convulsive therapy, Ann is put onto new medication which finally allows her to surface from years of physical and mental suffering. She now is very much alive, working, cultivating friendships, and going back to college. She loves life and is full of energy and self-motivation. The downside to this new miracle drug, however, is that it has a side effect of causing heart problems that could potentially kill her at any moment. But Ann decides to live her life to the fullest, making her life rich by helping others with their lives. The hopeful lessons learned from her long struggle -- including the need to persevere in finding the right professional help and correct medications -- are instructive to anyone who suffers from mental illness.

About the Author
Ann Kolsrud has struggled with mental illness most of her life. At the age of forty-five she finds a medicine which can give her the normalcy for which she has hungered. With this new medicine she finds herself picking up the pieces of a life lost. With this new medicine, she is currently attending the University of Iowa. She is majoring in Linguistics with a writing certificate. However, she plans to work in advocacy when she graduates. While promoting awareness of mental health issues, she understands the importance of equal opportunities for all disabilities. As for her love life, she is single, stating, "No one seems to be able to get past my diagnosis and appreciate the loving, passionate woman that I am." Ann continues to move forward taking her service dog "Turner" with her. "I have him for many reasons," she says. "But I simply say,' he just makes me feel better." As for her parents, Ann believes that she is in a good place with them. Although over the years life has been very difficult with them, Ann realizes that they simply have done their best. "I got to love them for trying," she states. In summing it up, it is Ann's hope that she has successfully conveyed the plight of the mentally ill. "I will not feel satisfied with my work until one person can come up to me and say, 'I understand." In all, Ann says she wrote the book for herself but then she adds, "I published it for the world!"

Mental disease, specifically the type that the author endures.difficult to understand. Schizophrenia varies with the patient. I have had numerous discussions with Ann Kolsrud covering most facets of her life.I had the privilege of meeting her parents.
Reading "Almost Normal" touches many emotional buttons. Incredible to unbelievable thoughts enter your mind. Ann Kolsrud has the ability to express herself with impact.I consider "Almost Normal" 2nd Edition a must read for mental health professionals, people exposed to schizophrenic patients.Ann provides an authoritative inside exposure to the demons terrorizing their complicated lives.
Ann's story is course, but truthful;pitiful but.real;an insight beyond expectation.After my last discussion with Ann I was pleased to observe her to be almost normal.

Upgrade

The 2nd edition of this book is an upgrade as it is expanded to include far more detail and the majority of the text has been re-written in a straight-forward, clear prose that's easier to follow. The additional material reinforces even more greatly the author's relentless struggle to feel well and have stability. This edition elicited an even deeper level of empathy from me for her challenging journey with mental illness. Despite the pain and heaviness of this journey, she summons the courage and determination to get up each day and keep on trying. Ms. Kolsrud leaves us with hope that life is turning around for her as a result of a new medication that has given her a new lease on life. As she exclaims, "I put my small arms out in the big sky and leap into my new world."

Ann allows readers to journey with her through her triumphs and struggles to not only survive but to embrace all life can be. As both a mental health professional and human with her own struggles with mental illness, this book is recommended without reservation. If you are considering this purchase, consider purchasing two; you will find yourself thinking of others that will not only identify with Ann's thoughts and experiences but appreciate the familiarity of Ann's path of embracing and re-framing human vulnerability.

A good book for getting to college level

We use this text for the supplemental/academic skills courses we offer at my community college, for those people whose reading skills are rusty for a number of reasons, including having been out of school for a number of years (sometimes as long as four or five decades), not having paid attention in class in high school, or other low-level literacy related reasons.

This book is well organised for a semester-long course that will bring out many of the critical skills necessary for doing college level work. Regardless of the discipline one goes into in college, one will have to do reading - this is as true in the nursing school, the electronics/drafting programmes, the business skills areas as well as those going on to full-fledge four-year and onward college degrees.

The book begins by exploring issues in active learning and vocabulary, some of the key concepts necessary for comprehending easily what one is reading. From there, particular kinds of reading skills are emphasised - looking for the main idea, recognising patterns of organisation and flow, seeing different points of view in the text, and beginning practice with critical thinking and engagement skills.

Within each section, there are readings and essays designed to strengthen the points being emphasised. These come from a wide variety of sources and cover a lot of different topics, so that they are not all about any particular thing, but rather each student will most likely find something of interest along the way. I find the articles very interesting, and the questions developed for the various articles enhance my understanding (this despite the fact that I have, by comparison to the target audience for this text, a very advanced degree of reading capability). This is a popular book among the students who come into our tutoring centre; they have questions and need help with the various concepts, but most like the variety of selections. One particular favourite is the essay entitled 'Monkey Love', by James V. McConnell, that gives a brief history of the Harlow experiments with young monkeys and surrogate mother figures. Essays on terrorism, women in history, low-carb pizza, media influences, Malcolm X (and his story about learning to read), and other pieces relevant to our current culture make reading less of a chore and more of a pleasure, which is key to getting students to progress through the material. The pages are colourful and interesting to look at from a graphic/visual standpoint, which also aids in the learning process.

The title 'Bridging the Gap' is very appropriate, given the task is to bridge the gap between high school (however long ago that was for many students) and college-level reading they will shortly encounter after taking this class.
