Adventure and Romance

Family, romance, adventure, mystery, danger and “secrets”. Now, who doesn’t like this combination? I’ve read Lightning Lingers and REALLY, really liked this book. It’s a nail biter for sure. I like how Barbara "threads" her stories from one book into the next. When you read her books it's always wise to read the first one in a series of course, but if you don't, the way she writes just draws you right in and a synopsis of the storyline is there in the very first pages. In this one we travel to Mexico to a small town out in “nowhere”. There is a chase through a forest and while the characters are running for their lives, you feel like you are right there with them. I tell you, you won’t want to put the book down. CANNOT wait until the third one comes out and we find out what is behind all the mystery. Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors. I always try to read her novels. In fact I think I’ve read most all of them and have quite a few in my collection.

WOW ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE

Book two of the Lightening Strikes series was adventure packed. Picking where the first book left off we pick up with Jake and Kat as they head to Mexico to rescue Kat's brother. After their plane goes down they have to find their way to a remote village. And along the way they find some of the answers they need plus find their way back to each other. This book was non stop adventure and fun. Barbara has another hit and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Katherine & Jake's story!

Book 2 of the Lightning Strikes trilogy doesn't disappoint. In Book 2, we are drawn into the life of Alicia's brother, Jake. He is a pilot like his father was and even flies out of the same airstrip. Katherine is the one that got away. Jake has never stopped loving her. Katherine gets a call from her brother TJ from Mexico. He is there on a trip for work and feels that he is in danger. He wants Katherine to go home and watch over their mother. When Katherine gets there, she finds her mother in a worse case of dementia & poor health than she expected. TJ had not told her that he had hired home help for their mom. Jake is visiting his mother in the neighborhood when he finds out Katherine has returned.

When Katherine & Jake were dating, Jake was always telling Katherine and TJ stories about his great grandmother, the land in Mexico and their family connection to lightening. Believing that TJ will head to that village, Katherine ends up hiring Jake to fly her down there. They end up crashing in a lightning strike and running for their lives.

Will Katherine & Jake let their love win this time? Will they find TJ before it's too late? What about Jake's dad? Is this all just coincidence?

Barbara is great at writing a story that draws you deep into the story. You don't want to put it down. You are drawn into the characters and their lives and live their adventures with them. You could read this as a stand alone but you will miss out on some of the references from Book 1. I loved this book! It transitioned into the last book in the series and leaves you impatient for more!

For more than five decades, the Marshallese have experienced the effects of the weapons testing program on their health and their environment. This book amplifies the voice of the Marshallese who share their knowledge about illnesses, premature deaths, and exile from their homelands. The author uses linguistic analysis to show how the Marshallese developed a unique radiation language to discuss problems related to their radiation exposure problems that never existed before the testing program. Drawing on her own experiences working with the government of the Marshall Islands, the author emphasizes the role of an applied anthropologist in influencing policy, and empowering community leaders to seek meaningful remedies.

About the Author
Holly M. Barker began her work with the Marshallese when she served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1988 to 1990 on Mili Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). After a brief stint with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill, Holly joined the RMI's embassy in Washington, D.C., where she was employed until 2008. While working full-time at the embassy in Washington, D.C., Holly earned an M.A. in Education and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from American University. Holly has represented the RMI at community, national, bilateral, and international forums, including conferences at the United Nations on such topics such as the extension of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. She currently resides with her family in Seattle, Washington, and is a full-time lecturer in the Anthropology Department at the University of Washington.

Very important read that most people have no idea of the story of. I bought this for a class and it is a lot of money for the size of the book, but I decided to keep it and have let friends borrow it so they are also informed of the tragedy that happened in the Marshall Islands and the problems there that are still not resolved. I suggest this read.

Paul D. Groves is a scientist with the Navigation and Positioning Algorithms Team at QinetiQ, Ltd., based in Farnborough, Hampshire, U.K. He is a fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and is a member of its technical and R&D committees. He is also a chartered physicist of the Institute of Physics. He studies at the University of Oxford, where he earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics and a Ph.D. in atomic and laser physics.

Excellent, much better than its peers

Trying to work out which GPS/INS book to spend your $100 on? Maybe Farrell's book? Aided Navigation: GPS with High Rate Sensors Titterton's? Strapdown Inertial Navigation Technology (IEE Radar, Sonar, Navigation and Avionics Series) Or one of the others out there?

Answer: This one. It's clearer and more complete than Farrell and covers more ground than Titterton. It's accessible and readable. You can actually start from the word go and actually implement a complete GPS/INS with this book. Score!

The book, however, is not perfect. It's chapter on augmenting other sensors is superficial and incomplete. It states, but does not go into much detail about the manoeuvre requirements for attitude observability. It's missing direct-form implementations of GPS/INS and with it, several more modern estimation methods (e.g. particle filter, UKF, ...).

However, against the book's peers it's a good step ahead and recommended for both students in the field and practitioners.

great book about navigation systems

This book is definitely orientated for a person who wants to learn about navigation systems, accelerometer, etc. The ideas are clear and precise, very well elaborated. The book is technical but also it has a non-technical appreciation that makes this book easy to understand.
If you are in the navigation systems business, this books is a most. Very good explanations about kalman filter and how they work.
Go for it, you will be not disappointed.

Great Navigation Book

This is a great naviagation book. The notation is unambiguous and consistent throught the book. This is impressive for a subject that has so many parameters. The explanations are well written. I consider this book to be essential to the practicing GNC engineer's library.

She and Matilde become fast friends, and Virginia takes over the cleaning while Matilde works on her jokes. Trouble comes when Lane's husband Charles reveals that he has found his soul mate, or "bashert" in a cancer patient named Anna, on whom he has operated. The actors who play Charles and Anna also play Matilde's parents in a series of dream-like memories, as we learn the story about how they literally killed each other with laughter, giving new meaning to the phrase, "I almost died laughing". This theatrical and wildly funny play is a whimsical and poignant look at class, comedy and the true nature of love.

Ruhl's Quirky and Brilliant Voice At Its Best

Sarah Ruhl is emerging as an important voice in contemporary theater, and anyone who has read one of her scripts or seen a production of her work can understand why. Her voice is quirky and refreshing, and yet it doesn't become a gimmick or lose itself by being unrelatable. Cleanliness, the subject of this work, weaves its way through the lives of the characters as they struggle with family and relationships, grief, and the meaning of true love.

The two main characters, Lane and Virginia, are sisters with very different ideas about cleaning. The play opens with Lane talking about her Brazillian housekeeper, Matilde, who has given up trying to clean. Lane is infuriated; a successful doctor, she makes it clear that she did not go to medical school and work all of the hours that she has worked just to clean her own house. For her, cleaning is menial work, beneath her. Virginia on the other hand can't believe that anyone would give up cleaning their own house. How do you know progress, she asks the audience, if you don't know how quickly dust accumulates under your bed. For Virginia, cleaning is a refuge from the "dirtiness" of everyday living, of a world that isn't perfect and certainly isn't fair.

There are other characters and complex interactions, but the heart of this show is Lane's depressed housekeeper, Matilde. Determined to become a comedian and write the perfect joke, she is haunted by memories of her parents: her mother "died laughing" (because if you've heard the perfect joke, why would you continue to live?) and her father killed himself directly after. Her attempts to construct witty and ribald jokes, usually in her native tongue, are humarous; their juxtaposition with her memories of her parents and their magical love are heart-breaking. Matilde is one of the great tragic characters of contemporary theater.

Fans of magical realism will enjoy the playful use of space: actions on a balcony (imagined as another apratment) affect the characters below and disembodied words appear on the walls (translations of jokes, explanatory words, etc). Though not as spectacular as the staging of Ruhl's other great work EURYDICE (it's hard to compete with an elevator car filled with rain), the interplay between spaces helps reinforce the actions and consequences of characters and their decisions.

I would heartily recommend anything written by Ruhl, but this one is a special treat. Though not as emotionally-impactful as EURYDICE, it is a tender and often surprising meditation on love, and all of the clean and dirty emotions that it entails.

I really enjoyed Clean House! Ruhl's writing is easy to follow, and I love the simplicity of her writing. Her stage directions are also great, something that Ruhl is famous for. I like the simplicity of the comedy and would definitely recommend reading this play!

I love this edition of the play, although I believe I did detect a few typos. The pages are easy to turn and the formatting makes it very easy to read. I had no idea Samuel French published plays in this style. And it's a great play! Very original and funny.

Breath of Fresh Air

I really appreciate this book! In a world of cookie-cutter brand-identities where everything is reduced to a single geometric shape paired with a solid color, this was a breath of fresh air. I mean, sure, it has that, if that's what you're looking for. But what I most appreciate is that it has multiple classifications for the style of design used in the various brand identities depicted. My professor used to insist to us that every logo should be scalable to 1/4 inch without losing clarity, just in case it would be put on the side of a pencil. If that is your client's end goal, you should certainly be able to accomodate and provide them with a solution that meets their needs. However, for the rest of the world where minimalist, flat designs aren't always the answer, it's nice to see other options that have been handled professionally. I found loads of inspiring, beautiful work.

Paul F. Johnson

Many years ago, from the fountains of Mount Olympus came forth upon the planet a man, a mystery, and an enigma. Over many years, he grew; he developed amazing biceps, an intellect to rival the greatest minds in the universe, a personality larger than a fair-sized moon, and a smile that would melt the hearts of the iciest of witches. He fought in wars, raged battles against injustice, and was generally an all-round amazing type of guy. This is not his story. You see, while he could do all of this really cool stuff, he couldn't work his mobile, and worse, he was clueless about how to make his own apps. Then stepped forth a nice chap from Liverpool, and with a bit of patience, he showed him how to do it. This is his story. What made this Scouser worthy of helping the man from Olympus? The simple answer is experience. You see, he was there at the outset of the home computer boom of the early 1980s. He developed code in BASIC, Z80, the 6502 and ARM assembler, C, C++, C#, Pascal, and FORTRAN. He has won awards for programming and is a published author with Packt Publishing. Add these together and you can see why he was a worthy teacher. That, and he makes a killer cup of coffee! Paul (for that is his name) is 44, lives with his wife, dog, cats, and son and drinks way too much coffee! You can normally find Paul on the Facebook Xamarin Developers group, where he is an admin. He is currently in the planning stage for a follow up of this book, but this time, he is concentrating on using XAML instead of pure C# to develop Xamarin.Forms applications. This will combine his lifetime love of Dr. Who with his other love that is to create fun code. He is currently in the middle of buying enough coffee to fuel him through it - Brazil is on high alert!

A pretty good book that does a good job of introducing Xamarin Forms. He even covers the limitations of using PCL's (i.e. pointing out how some IO classes are not available) - little things like that can be very confusing when you're first starting out and expecting them to be there. He also covers setting up IOS provisions, push notifications and using maps. Features such as this involve a lot of knowing-where-to-go-just-to-point-and-click-a-checkbox and identifying those paths on your own can be quite frustrating so its nice to have a guide. Also covers a bit of Azure and a quick intro on Xamarin Labs. I could've done without the brief foray into his forensics past and building the time of death app but thats just my own personal idiosyncrasies. Overall a good intro book doesn't go deep like Petzold's book but you'll definitely walk away know a few things.

Could do better...

Unfortunately the problem with this book is that it doesn't know whether it is a reference guide, a cookbook or a tutorial.

The book starts off well as what I thought was a walkthough / tutorial on how to write an example app (tutorial); in this case a messenger app. The first 8 pages of chapter one introduce us to the planning stage, feature list, cross platform considerations, design considerations, backend storage (database) etc. but then dives straight into creating api keys for push notifications, certificates, profiles for iOS, and Azure (cookbook).

Chapter two introduces Xamarin Forms (reference) but then for some unknown reason spends the next 5 pages showing how to add a Windows Phone project on a PC to an application that was already started on a Apple Mac machine (tutorial). It then goes on to describe Inversion of Control, followed by Gestures and Maps. The book continues in a similar vein for the rest of the book.

Overall there's nothing wrong with the content and Paul obviously knows his stuff; there are a few snippets of useful information. It's just that it feels like the author has gotten bored after a few pages on one subject and decided to write about something else mid-chapter.

With Dan Hermes book already available and Charles Petzold's book on Xamarin due anytime soon I'm not sure of there's a place for this book.

As a Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer, I have been with Xamarin.Forms since its first stable version and I can tell for sure, that it is very difficult to fit in one book the required knowledge for starting building cross-platform applications.
The book Cross-platform UI Development with Xamarin.Forms by Paul F.Johnson, is a book that simply touches the great aspects and concerns of of starting building apps with the Xamarin.Forms. It is not a cookbook or a walkthrough (step-by-step) guide for Xamarin.Forms and it is quite certain that proper knowledge of the platform is advised in order to follow each chapter.
I really enjoyed every chapter, because it really contains practical and useful knowledge not only for constructing a better UI but also to fully understand the cross-platform constructing process.
I surely recommend it to native android or ios developers that want to find some quick answers for the Xamarin.Forms and its capabilities, before diving deeper in the platform.

About the Author
Ann Gordon has been in the early childhood field for over 45 years as a teacher of young children, of parents, and of college students. She has taught in lab schools, church-related centers, and private and public preschool and kindergarten programs. While at Stanford, Ann was at the Bing Nursery School for 11 years and was a lecturer in the Psychology Department. For 10 years she also served as an adjunct faculty member in four colleges, teaching the full gamut of early childhood courses. Ann served as executive director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools for 14 years, where more than 1,100 early childhood programs were a part of her network. She is now consulting in the areas of early childhood curriculum governance and professional development.

Kathryn Williams Browne has been a teacher most of her adult life: a teacher of young children for nearly 20 years, a guide for parents of the families she served, and, more recently, a parent educator and an instructor of college students for more than 15 years. Her work with children includes nursery school, parent cooperatives, full-day child care, prekindergarten and bilingual preschools, and kindergarten and first grade. Kate's background in child development research led her to choose early childhood education. While a Head Teacher at Bing Nursery School and a lecturer with Stanford University, Kate developed a professional relationship with Ann Gordon that blossomed into work in teacher and parent education. Moreover, her role as a parent has influenced BEGINNINGS AND BEYOND: her two children were born during the first two editions, so the book grew along with them. Recent work as a consultant and public elementary school board trustee has offered Kate new perspectives on schools, reform, and collaboration. Working closely with her students while teaching in two community colleges over the last decade, she has gained constructive insights that inform this text in every revision.

Love this book!

I used this book in my very first college class for child development and I couldn't wait to have a copy of my own. I went on line searched for it on Amazon found it, ordered it and it was like brand new, I was so happy! I will be using this book regularly for good practices in my profession. I would tell anyone to order books through Amazon and it's seller they do a great job of getting the books to you in a timely manner and they are always in great condition. I'm a happy customer and will continue to order books.

Writing style is very confusing

I HATE this book. Here is an exact copy of a sentence from it: "It is called maturation because it sets out a sequence of cognitive (thinking) stages that is governed by heredity--how the body is structured biologically, with automatic (instinctive) behaviors such as an infant sucking at birth." I don't know if it's just me, but this book is soooo painful to read because the author slams WAY too much info into every sentence. The whole (thinking), --how the body is structured, (instinctive), such as an infant sucking at birth.....it's useless info, it distracts me from the main point. The author does this A LOT. Anytime a "big word" is used there's an explanation in parenthesis or an example after it. There's also a lot of sentences that just go on and on and on and I'm finding myself having to break it down to try to understand the main idea. For some people I guess it may be helpful to have the explanations like that but to me it's just confusing!!! I know what cognitive means, I know what heredity is, I know what automatic means, I know an example of an automatic behavior. I do not need to have all of these explained to me in one sentence, it's too much to try to focus on and I have to go back and weed out the useless information to get the main idea out of the sentence. When you're assigned to read about 50 pages a night for your class, there's no way I'm going to sit there and sift through everything to see what's important and what isn't. So, if you can easily weed out or skim over the extra info this book may be better suited for you, but if you're like me and need things to be straightforward and to the point, be warned.

About the Author
Jacqueline DeLaat is McCoy Professor of political science at Marietta College in Ohio and she also teaches online for the University of Maryland’s University College. In addition, she has lectured in China and Brazil, and in 2003 was selected for a Fulbright Teaching Award. Her educational background is in American politics and she holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in public administration. For over twenty five years Dr. DeLaat has taught political science in small liberal arts institutions, with major teaching areas in public policy, public administration, American politics and institutions, and women in politics and the workplace. She is known as an enthusiastic teacher, favoring active student projects and a dynamic classroom―including the frequent use of current event projects, case studies, and simulations. Prior to her teaching career, Dr. DeLaat worked in the Washington, D.C. area, and held a variety of administrative post in government and in quasi-governmental organizations. Her Washington experience has enhanced both her subsequent teaching and research. She has also consulted with several colleges and universities, as well as private and governmental organizations, on gender issues. For the past decade, Dr. DeLaat’s professional agenda has focused on the development of a series of teaching cases designed to prepare students, and workers, for gender issues in the contemporary workplace. Originally centered in the United States, the work has recently broadened to include case studies set in workplaces in other countries, including Brazil, China and Germany. Her cases are frequently presented at international case study meetings, and have won awards including a special grant from the American Bar Association’s Commission on Justice and Education. Within the political science community, she has presented on the pedagogy and development of case studies. Additionally, she has also presented at several International Women’s Conferences, and in 2005 conducted an interactive workshop on gender in the workplace at the first Women’s Leadership Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
