Needs To Be More User Friendly

I agonized (for a very short time) whether to rate this third revised edition of the encyclopedia three or four stars and decided on three. The first thing I noticed about this heavy volume is that there is slight difference in the title. The second edition was called "The Official NBA Basketball Encyclopedia"; this edition is simply "The Official NBA Encyclopedia". I suppose the league figured that If you know what the NBA is, the word "Basketball" is superfluous. Just finding the table of contents is a chore. After the title page, instead of a table of contents, there is a 30-page photo essay showing highlights of the league's history. The table of contents follows this opening section, and having to leaf through all the pictures to get to it gets old after the second time. Although this new edition has the same categories of statistical data as the previous edition (updated through the 1999-2000 season), the arrangement of some information is unorthodox. For example, the "NBA Seasons In Review" are presented in reverse order, so the 1999-2000 season is at the front, and you have to work backwards to find the year you are looking for. Fortunately the "All-Time Player Directory", with each player's complete record, lists names in normal alphabetical order. On the plus side, the pages of these two chapters are marked on the edge opposite the binding, so they are easy to find immediately. Besides the NBA, this book also gives comprehensive coverage to the American Basketball Association, which existed for nine seasons (1967-1976). The chapter on "The International Player" has a handy list of all foreign-born players who ever played in the NBA. The biggest disappointment is the section on "The Coaches". There are articles on the top head coaches, including those with over 400 victories in the NBA. However, unlike the official encyclopedias for major league baseball and the National Football League, there is no register for head coaches where one can look up each coach's professional record (this was missing from earlier editions as well). Most people know that Red Auerbach was the longtime head coach of the Boston Celtics (1950-51 through 1965-66). But he also coached the Washington Capitols for three years before coming to the Celtics. The only way to find any coach's won-lost record is to plow through the "All-Time Team Records" at the beginning of chapter 30. I don't think the reader should have to do that. Chapter 30 also has the NBA's all-time individual records for various statistical categories. One statistic I found fascinating was that Wilt Chamberlain scored 50 or more points in 118 games in his career. In second place is Michael Jordan with 30. If the next edition includes a coaches register, I may upgrade my rating.

New Encyclopedia has absolutely everything!

The Official NBA Encyclopedia is the best book any hoops fan will ever read. Not only does it hold all the info for the current players, but it holds the complete history of basketball. The NBA, all its seasons, the Draft, International players, coaches, referees, expanding, photos, development, Hall of Fame, and tons of other great stuff are found as well as complete reviews of the ABA,NBL,and ABL. The NBA Seasons in Review is one of my favorite sections. The only negative thing about this book is that the seasons for the NBA are listed backwards. This encyclopedia has every stat for every player that ever played. I love reading this awesome history, and the Official NBA Encyclopedia is the perfect gift for any hoops fan. If I could, I'd give it more than 5 stars.

A Must Read for Women

Once upon a time, I joined Twitter, not looking for anything in particular. What I found was so much more. Somehow (and my memory fails me as to how exactly) I found Deborah Dunn (@deborahdunn). She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist here in NC. As I began to follow her updates, I quickly learned that she had just published a new book, titled "Stupid About Men: 10 Rules for Getting Romance Right," that was set to be released on February 3. Right away, I was interested, because let's face it, my track record with guys has been less than stellar. I then followed the Twitter account that she had set up for the book launch (@stupidaboutmen) and waited for the day that the book was available for order on Amazon. On the day that it was released, I ordered it, and anxiously awaited its arrival.

Once it arrived, I wanted to start reading it right away, and hoped to get through it very quickly. Once I started reading, however, I realized that this wasn't just one of those books that you fly through. Even though the book is written in a somewhat light hearted style, the subject matter lends it self to actually thinking about what you have read, and letting it sink in. If you truly want to let this book help you, I recommend going through it slowly and reflecting on which characteristics of women who are Stupid About Men you possess.

Each chapter is based upon a classic fairy tale character, and focuses on a "rule" that we can learn from the the character. At the beginning of each chapter is an excerpt from the classic fairy tale. To me, this was a brilliant concept. If provides a concrete example (fairy tale characters that we all know) to explain what we, as women, have been doing "wrong" for so long. Every girl dreams of having a fairy tale romance, but Dunn shows us just how misconstrued our ideas of romance and relationships have been all these years.

Not only does the book show you the problems that women have with relationships, but it gives you tips and ideas on how to correct those issues. This book is really about equipping women with the tools they need to not only better themselves, but to be successful in relationships with men. Just because the title has the word "Stupid" in it, does not mean that Dunn is implying that women are stupid. She is simply saying that when it comes to men, a lot of us have made some really stupid decisions, and we just need to understand why we keep making them. I have really taken the things that I read in this book to heart. A lot of the changes that I have recently decided to make in my life were prompted by reading this book.

One of the things that I really appreciated about this book is that although the author is a Christian, and the book is published by Howard Books, the Christian division of Simon and Schuster, the book is not pushy on religion. There are several mentions of God, and the relationship that one forms with him, but the books does not take a "force God down your throat" approach.

I am really glad that I found Deborah Dunn online, and even more glad that I decided to read her book. A lot of women would benefit from reading it, whether you are single or in a relationship. Somewhere inside of most of us is a girl that is Stupid About Men. Whether we are a Cinderella, a Snow White, or a Repunzel, or even a combination of several of the characters, this book will be of great help in your journey to "getting" men. I know for me, personally, reading it was the first step to finding my "happily ever after"

Best dating book ever!

This is honestly one of the best dating advice books I have ever read, if not the best one. And I have read a lot of them! The book uses very good examples and analogies. And while the author is Christian, it does not come across as preachy at all! It is easy and fun to read, while at the same time very insightful. I highly recommend it to any woman of any age. It actually gives you the tools to avoid/escape bad relationships, while at the same time be able to have a good one. And while it talks about things you can do to better yourself, such as furthering your education and picking up a hobby, it does not tell you to change your inner essence or personality. I highly recommend this book- even for people who are already in satisfying relationships.

The perfect fantasy

A lot of people, me included, read to indulge their own imaginations, or to escape the realities of life! Everyone has a different idea of what constitutes escapism and that is probably why well written fantasy spans such a diverse and broad spectrum of genres and age groups. However, not all fantasy stories are actually successful in crossing ages and genres.

The reason for this is that for a fantasy to work, the story needs to hold some degree of realism. The reader needs to be able to associate with it and see themselves in it.
When it comes to fantasy I expect the impossible!

When I started this book I hoped for the impossible and what I got was pure brilliance. This story is written with incredible intelligence and crosses genres and ages groups seamlessly. It is captivating, adventurous, creative, vibrant, emotive and unpredictable. I fully believed in the fantasy, loved the plot and think the characters were just perfect.

The historical back drop to the story was excellent, and, clever word painting and research made me feel as though I was with the characters at every turn.

The technical and scientific explanations were, to my mind, plausible and brought the whole plot together in an incredibly exciting way.

This is a tale that feels real yet clearly is not. It has a story that captures enough reality to ground the tale and make it believable, yet not enough to bring me crashing back into reality. It is a tale into which I disappeared and hid from the world; where I connected with the characters yet knew their problems were not mine; where I touched their lives and felt their worlds, but still feel safe in my own.

G.L. Breedon has, in my opinion, created the perfect fantasy and I am so excited about this book and believe it has great potential.

This may be a story written for young adults but older adults who enjoy fantasy will not be disappointed.

To my mind this is a better story than any of the Harry Potter books and I have no hesitation in recommending this book to EVERYONE!

Take the Time to Read This Book!

G.L. Breedon's THE WIZARD OF TIME swirls magical realism throughout time and space.

The day Gabriel Salvador dies is the day he finds his place within the world. Gabriel is a Time Mage, but he's more special than any of them realize. He and his group of mages travel throughout time to stop the evil wizards who want to destroy the Primary Continuum. When he realizes he's a part of a prophecy, he must find balance between the light and dark, or lose himself for all time.

THE WIZARD OF TIME's greatest strength is in its characters. Each one is a three-dimensional individual living their lives in many shades of gray. I love the camaraderie between friends. Six magics are used that are familiar but Breedon takes them to a higher level. Although the beginning starts out a bit clich�, Breedon sucked me into Gabriel's world. The plot is sometimes a bit predictable but enjoyable. I love the history and cultures interspersed throughout. The Malignancy Mages are fantastically complicated villains. This novel explores the philosophical musings of light and dark, good and evil. The time travel scenes are awesome and well-thought out.

THE WIZARD OF TIME by G.L. Breedon is a wonderful fantasy novel geared towards young adults but a great read for all. I can't wait to read book two.

So ready to be made into a movie.

There will of course be comparisons to Harry Potter because of the limited imaginations of so many reviewers who only know those stories to represent the young adult science fiction/fantasy genre. But this book is so much more. It ran like a movie through my head the whole time I read it and what it reminded me of with regards to its overwhelming creativity and just aliveness was the film Howl's Moving Castle. I totally think Studio Ghibli should pick this up and turn it into some fabulous anime before somebody else gets it. It's that good. Two thumbs up.

I think this is the perfect book to read with your kids because you'll enjoy it too. I mean, it's like, remember when you read Stephen King when you were in 8th grade and thought it was terrific. That's because it was terrific for someone in junior high. Well, GL Breedon's The Wizard of Time is that book for your kids' generation but it actually has a main character with whom they can really identify. If I had had this kind of book around when I was a kid, I wouldn't have bothered with Stephen King.

Two books in One

This book really covers two subjects. One is that it is a book about the formation, rise, operation, decline and fall of a company. The other is that it is about the rise and fall of the telecom market in the early 2000's.

The author was the CEO of Net2000 a telecom company formed in 1993 to its final hours in 2002. Inbetween was the magical moment of an IPO making the company listed on NASDAC. Only about 300 companies a year do an IPO, and that's out of about 600,000 companies that are started each year.

The other part of the story is about what happened in the telecomm market during these years. This was the time when WorldCom made the slight error in their accounting, only a small error, just a little over $10 billion.

This is the book of how they took the company from just an idea in the telecom business, through getting it started, initial funding and finally an IPO. Then the market changed. The best planning they could do failed. I am left with the question of what could another set of managers have done or was the marketplace so disruptive that nothing could have saved them.

This book takes a very detailed and personal point of view starting with the author's decision to leave his telecom company and start a new one with several of his colleagues. You are taken through the entire progression of his company from basic foundations through to the IPO and subsequent collapse. It's a great story and discusses a lot of issues any entrepreneur needs to think about.

Why was the 3rd edition published?

The 3rd edition of this book, published in 1996, is identical to the 2nd edition published in 1993. The only difference I could find was the design of the cover page. If you already own a copy of the 2nd edition, you don't have to buy the newer edition because there is nothing new in the 3rd edition. Just don't be confused.

About the Author
CHRIS SOLARSKI received a BA in computer animation and began working as a 3D character and environment artist for Sony Computer Entertainment in London. Eventually, Solarski enrolled in art classes at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, he discovered the exciting connection between classical art techniques and video game design. He currently develops his own video games under Solarski Studio. He also works as creative director of the Swiss-based social gaming startup Gbanga, and lectures at SAE Institute in Zurich.

Great for any artist

I just finished reading this book and absolutely loved it. I actually got it for my daughter who wants to be a video game artist. I started reading it myself and couldn't put it down. Other than the occasional sketch, I wouldn't consider myself an artist. This book explains things about perspective, figures, landscapes and overall themes in a way that really makes sense. I would recommend it for any artist, not just people interested in video game design. However, if you want to be in video game design, this is something you should read. I usually just skim through most art related books, but for some reason I read everything in this one. There's something about the way it was written and the connections between classic art and video games that really made sense. For example, using a classic painting of a landscape, he explains how objects in the distance have less contrast and less defined edges compared to the overall background. The further away it gets, the more the object and the background blend together. Then he shows the background of a very familiar video game and in my head I said "ah-ha".

Love this book

I'm an art teacher who teaches foundations and I've been searching for years for a book that connects the import of knowing the basics and their application to today's technology and media. This is the book. A Rembrandt on one page, a Halo still on the other. The book discusses perspective, foreshortening, atmosphere, composition, figure - all the things an artist should know but students who want to do digital work think the computer will do for them. This book is fun and really integrates the two genres (traditional and digital artwork) in a way that is useful and cohesive to the reader. Highly recommend for students and teachers alike. Not for art snobs who discriminate against the genre, but it would do them good to read. Venues that pay commercial artists and designers are just as dependent on the artful use of basics as the masters of traditional fine art were, and let's face it, digital is making headway into fine art too. Highly recommend.

Decent Introductory Book to Drawing

Most of the focus is on drawing fundamentals, human body, and comparing classical art to modern videogame art. This is not a comprehensive guide to creating video game art. It is missing other important topics such as creating art digitally, inorganic objects such as buildings, and color. More useful for the beginner artist such as me than an expert traditional artist transitioning to game design. I have improved greatly in my drawing skills over the past month despite only spending 30 minutes a day on this book. Another good thing is that the materials to learn from this book you need can be found easily and cheaply. All you need is paper, pencil, and an eraser to do most of the tutorials.
