This is one of the best available books on mestizo curanderism of the Northern Coast of Peru. Douglas Sharon is an anthropologist who, supported by grants from UCLA, spent a couple of seasons witnessing and helping the well-known curandero Eduardo Calderon with his sessions. The book provides a close-up personal portrait of this remarkable man, an unparalleled description of curanderist practices, as well as a comparative history and analysis of Peruvian/Bolivian and Amazon shamanism.

Calderon was an educated person, trained in Trujillo's Catholic seminary and School of Fine Arts in Lima. he also was an innovating fisherman and a restaurateur of archeological artefacts of Moche and Chimu cultures. Sharon notes that Eduardo read extensively in theology and philosophy as well as in psychology, archeology, art, medicine and the occult. Hence, we are not talking about an uneducated backwoods guy but rather a sophisticated, urban man with a zest for life and a desire to help his fellow men. Sharon writes:

"There was a lusty, earthy quality to Eduardo's system that reflected a direct contact with nature and a realistic perception of joys and sorrows of the human situation. There was nothing of the lotus-eater in this wordly man of action. At all times he emphasized to me the need for perseverance and constant practice in learning to become a curanero. He said I could learn only by doing. The mesa he set up at night and the rituals he conducted were direct applications of his philosophy....[...] As I watched his daily interaction [with the incessant stream of old fishing companions, students, athletes, artists, teachers, university professors, shopkeepers, farmers, truck drives, old people, youngsters) I realized that Eduardo's greatest masterpiece was his own life. He molded it with the same deliberation and dexterity that shaped his ceramics."

Sharon describes many night rituals involving use of hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus pachanoi) and/or Datura inoxia that were combined with other herbs, tobacco and alcohol and imbibed through the nostrils; trips to the sacred Las Huaringas lagoons, divination, exorcisms and anti-sorcery as practiced by Calderon and a famous old-style Indian curandero (don Florentino). He provides photographs of Calderon's mesa with a minute description of every item (all 78 of them)and its use. There are remarkable stories of healing involving native and Norte Americano clients, as well as an analysis of tensions between three cultures, Indian, mestizo and Western, that represent a brewing cauldron of envy and witchcraft that curandero has to deal with.

The experiences lead Sharon to conclude: "My observations have convinced me that anthropologists need to reevaluate seriously their concepts regarding traditional therapists and their role in twentieth century societies." An interesting, if perhaps controversial, statement.

The book also describes (pre)Inca cosmology and the historical use of San Pedro on Coastal regions as suggested by unearthed artefacts. While this synthesis today appears a bit outdated, a lot of it is still valid... and descriptions of sessions with Calderon are unsurpassed. Although I heartily recommend this book, the prices charged by private resellers are outrageous at $140. Try to get the book somewhere else, or get "Curanderos and Clients in Northern Peru" co-written by Sharon and Donald Joralemon if you have more of an academic bent.

A Classic in its Own Right

After reading this book, not only do I have a greater respect for our Founding Fathers, but I also understand why Ms. Bowen used the word "Miracle" in her title. It's remarkable to think that our Constitution, which has proven durable over the past two centuries in spite of its flaws, arose out of those intense debates in Philadelphia's sweltering summer.
This book is particularly valuable for its perspective. Learning about the delegates' personalities and backgrounds was fascinating, and seeing the Convention in the context of the social and political conditions of early America was especially insightful. I also enjoyed seeing the early colonies through the eyes of foreign visitors.
If you're interested in the history of the U.S. Constitution, this book is a must (my condolences to the disgruntled high school students of previous reviews).

A Classic and Important Book

This is the story of the formation of our constitutional govenrment.
Catherine Drinker Bowen's book is a classic that tells how America's founding fathers debated, compromised and struggled to create a permanent system of rebublican government in a world ruled by monarchs and absolutists.
The debates are here, as well as the personalities. The story of how various elements of our governing structure were arrived at is fascinating as well as illuminating to any serious student of the American system. Important debates regarding the nature of the presidency, small state versus large state interests (how we got our Senate), the desirability of direct democracy versus state interests (part of how we got the Electoral College), the finessing of the slave issue -- its all here.
I read this book and was filled with a profound sense of pride and amazement at the story of how the "gentlemen of Philadelphia" were able to navigate such complex issues and arrive at the masterpiece that is our Constitution.
In Bowen's hands, this moving and patriotic story is well told and thoroughly explored. I imagine many of you reading this review have this book on a political science syllabus, but it should be read by any with an interest in our Constitution or our government's history.

Miracle at Philadelphia....most illuminating.

I purchased this book over ten years ago and for various reasons, I did not get to read it until last summer. A pleasant surprise! The book places the Constitutional Convention within the context of the times, political and social climate and the beliefs and personalities of those responsible for its creation. Reading this, I developed a flavor for the circumstances which brought about the Constitution. One develops a true appreciation for the ultimate collective wisdom of the founding fathers. The book has been in print for many, many years. If you read it, you'll find out why.

Wonderfully Written!!!

This was my first book I read from the author Laura Bell. For someone as young as Ms. Bell she is a wonderful writer. Emilia is a young widow who was made to marry at a young age to a very abusive man. Six years later she is free of his verbal and physical abuse. Young Sebastian a solicitor becomes the next Earl and realizes he has a huge responsibility including the young widow!!! He falls in love with Emilia and she thinks he will ask for her hand but it doesn't happen. You have heartache, passion, disappointment, secrets, love all wrapped up in an awesome 1st book by the author!!! I have read everything she has written on WattPad.

"THE ONLY" engineering look at the first airplane

I first became aware of this book while visiting the Kitty Hawk Memorial in North Carolina. There, a park service employee showed me his dog-eared copy of this precious book. Even then, it was out of print and unavailable in the memorial park's gift shop. I only had it in my hands for a few minutes, but the book contained many engineering drawings and aerodynamic data which I have not even seen at the AIR & SPACE museum in D.C. or at WRIGHT PATTERSON A.F.B. in the Airforce Museum there. I have looked for it since. A must have for any true aviation buff.

Worth the Price

The first and last word on Sharps firearms, history, variations, both rifles and pistols. An absolute must for those interested in Sharps rifles. If you are contemplating purchasing a replica Sharps rifle, then read this book first. Look carefully at the many pictures. It will help you to purchase more historically accurate firearm whether target, military, or buffalo gun, that you will be proud to own. If wanting a collector's item it will help you sort out the "common" versions from the rarer models. Sellers book is constantly quoted by other authors and auction houses quote this book for their descriptions of originals up for sale. Definitely worth the price.

If you own (or want )a Sharps or just interested you need it

Very detailed book with a LOT of information on just about everything Sharps ever made. You get a good amount of facts & figures, a lot of photographs and other illustrations.
There is actually too much for one book. I found myself wanting more information on the 1874 model Sharps (the type used in the movie Quigley Down Under)and while there is a great deal it managed to not cover everything I wanted. This is most likely because in his preface Mr. Sellers writes that he originally came up with a 1500 page manuscript that had everything in it. Obviously to get it down to a publishable 358 pages a lot had to be cut out but you will get information on design, development, models, types & variations. There is also a lot of stuff on accessories, even the types of finishes that the rifles and other guns could be purchased with.
Anyone who owns or wants to own a Sharps should have this book as should anyone interested in the history of American firearms.
Although listed as out of print I have a copy that came out in 2003, it might not look as nice as some of the earlier editions but has the same information. If you can't find an old one (same price as new I think), try one of the major shooting supplies websites, or try Shiloh Rifle itself.

Great, except for one thing

Mr. Sellers' book is a wonderfully researched reference piece that covers just about everything you wanted to know about Sharps firearms. What's missing, and very important to me, are the records of those guns which were cartouched by Federal inspectors during the Civil War years. Some were and some weren't and it would be nice to know why the disparity. I can't recall even seeing one photo of the left side of the "War Years" Sharps where a cartouche would be seen. Also, some of the early model 1859 Sharps carbines were issued with brass furniture. It would be nice to know just how many were sold as such before the changeover to iron furniture. Rumor has it that about 2000 of these with brass furniture were sold with 1600 going to the state of Georgia. Others says that Virginia bought about half of them. I'm fortunate in that I own one of these rarities and was disappointed that Mr. Sellers could not shed any more light on their history and fate. Otherwise, a great book and highly recommended.
