About the Author
Angelika Schrobsdorff was born in 1927 in Freiburg. She immigrated to Sofia in 1939 with her mother and returned to Germany in 1947. She married Claude Lanzmann, director of the landmark 1985 documentary Shoah, in 1971, and, after more than a decade in Paris and Monaco they moved to Israel in 1983. Today, Angelika Schrobsdorff lives in Berlin. She is the author of ten novels and two works of short stories.

Must read!

You Are Not Like Other Mothers is a simple title for a book that is neither simple fiction nor dry enough to be called non-fiction. Instead it is a narrative vacuum into which the reader is sucked along with the author's thoughtful (if belated) understanding of her flighty, pleasure-seeking mother, Else, and those who lived in Else's world.
A middle-class Jewish girl in pre-WWI Berlin, Else, to her parents' horror, loved Christmas trees; as a new wife and mother, she elopes with the moody, artistic gentile Fritz. In self-absorbed roaring '20s Berlin, she and Fritz both take numerous lovers and throw countless wild parties, the guest lists including most of Germany's intellectual elite.
Meanwhile, Else's decent Jewish parents are kept in the dark about her wild lifestyle until Else becomes pregnant with her third child, who does not belong to her husband. Fritz chooses to leave Else and marry his lover.
The child turns out to be Angelika, the precocious and peculiar author of this epic character study. Through Angelika's reflections and Else's copious letters, we live through Germany's good times, then Hitler's rise, Else's last-minute evacuation to Bulgaria with her children, narrowly escaping the beginning of the Holocaust. Then, the misery of war and the terror and joy of the Allied bombs, the miraculous fall of the Third Reich, and the close of the Iron Curtain on Eastern Europe.
Else and her child finally return to Germany, where Else, tired and terminally ill, confronts her memories of her misspent life and reflects upon her newly-found, hard-won wisdom.
Schrobsdorff writes a poetic ode to her mother, whom she hated and adored, revered and pitied, and who couldn't help but to live life to its fullest and regret the consequences later. This book was fantastic. I more than recommend it.

A Memoir, not a Novel

Essentially, this is a memoir of the author's mother, Else Kirchner, a remarkable woman whose life spanned two world wars and was in many ways a pioneer for social and sexual freedom. I read the first 200 pages or so with considerable interest, but admit to skimming more rapidly through the remaining 330. For I bought it in the belief that it would be a novel -- it is clearly labeled as such on the back cover -- and increasingly felt the lack of the focus that a true fiction writer would have brought to it.
Gradually, as when I Googled the name of Else's first husband, the critic and playwright Fritz Schwiefert, I came to realize that all the people in the book were real. But there have been other novels about real people; Bruce Duffy's THE WORLD AS I FOUND IT (about Wittgenstein) and Colm T�ib�n's THE MASTER (Henry James) being two examples. Their authors call them novels, I suppose, to give themselves the freedom to invent dialogue, to speculate, to arrange events by theme rather than chronology. But it is a difficult form to bring off, and I don't feel that Schrobsdorff entirely succeeds.
Yet she does bring a lot of interest in the earlier sections, partly through the double perspective of the daughter returning to Berlin from Israel to dig up memories of her mother's life, partly through the intrinsic interest of that life itself. For Else broke all the moulds. Her marriage to Fritz, cultured and fascinating, but a Christian, caused her Jewish parents to break with her completely. When she answered his love affairs with one of her own, and expressed a determination to have a child with every man she loved, she came to epitomize the free spirit of the Berlin Twenties. At one point, she was living in a villa in Dahlem in a precarious m�nage-�-cinq: herself, Fritz (still her husband, and the father of her first child), Hans (the father of her second child, and a future Nazi), Erich (an upright businessman, her future second husband, and the author's father), and the Baroness Eugenie von Liebig (Fritz's mistress and her own best friend). One of the best reasons to read the book is the portrait of respectable Berlin society before the first war, and the "grandiose dance of death" that followed it.
But the book as a whole has too much tell and too little show. As the author, Angeli, grows up we have to hear about all her childhood memories also, and the portrait of her mother gets obscured by trivia. Surely Else was not alone among German Jews in downplaying the importance of the new racial laws, but detachment and wishful thinking does not make for a gripping narrative. She gets out by marrying a Bulgarian, and shortly afterwards sends for her daughter to follow her. These are facts, little more, merely amplifying the information on the jacket flap, and finally underlining how much I missed the power of a true novelist. Though the story continues for ten more years, I no longer had any interest in following it.

Amazing Read!!!

Currently reading this book. I cannot put into words how amazing this is. A read that every one should take the time to pick up. Angelika is such a dynamic writer. She seems to pride on reader involvement. Every sentence you read you feel like you're in the minds of the people she speaks to. Will be reading ALL of her translated novels!
