beautiful story, beautiful illustrations

This is a children's version of the Oscar Wilde story by the same name. It's a lovely story about a sparrow flying south for the winter who becomes friends with the statue of the prince. At the statue's request the sparrow cares for the poor and unfortunate in the city. It's tragic, the sparrow does die, but I don't think it is frightening or too sad for children. The point of the story is that love is the most important thing in life. It makes me cry every time, but in a good way!

A master piece

I looked hard to get this book now for my young boys after it was one of my favorites as a youngster. This is a real work of art! Illustrations are outstanding and beautiful!! Now we're getting a few more copies to give away. It is slightly more simplified than what I think would be perfect, but still it's a total pleausure to read to my kids.

My daughters love this story and the beautiful pictures. It is bittersweet, but a good way to discuss poverty and our responsibility to serve others
