Public speaking stripped down so as to become borderline useless
By Antonio Guster
Where do I begin.
I really wanted to like this book. I've heard great things about it and the author, so I dove in expecting some unique insights and techniques I could use for teaching my own course.

What I found disappointed me.

I found the author's coverage of outlining to be very bare-bones. So much so, that it severely diminishes the versatility a student might develop from drawing on a more complete outline. First you learn the rules, THEN you can break the rules. You don't break the rules first because then you don't have an understanding of why something works (or doesn't). This is like having an abridged grammar for developing speeches, but the fact of the matter is, when you're starting out, you need the complete grammar. Then later you can cut and modify what you do depending on how you want to stylize your expression, but not before. Omitted in this text are some major portions of the outline.
In an introduction it is vital to include certain bits of information:

The Attention getter or "hook" Is a statement that draws in your audience. It is crucial to hook them at the start.
Statement of relevance: When we speak with anyone we should adapt our message depending on our audience. How is my topic relevant to my audience? Why should they listen?
Statement of credibility: Why should they listen to ME?
Thesis statement: What is the ultimate point I am trying to "prove" or assert with the evidence I will provide in my speech?
Preview: What will we cover?

This book only includes the attention getter and preview of main points. What? The introduction sets the groundwork from which the speech flows. A solid introduction primes your audience to listen and allows you to make an impact. My students actually began to incorporate some of these missing pieces themselves because there was no way to really do without them. So why cut these portions out? The students SHOULD know all of these parts of the introduction, their functions and how to apply them. Knowing how to work with these parts will allow them to later be creative in including, these in other ways throughout the speech and they might even cleverly blend them into the hook.

Additionally, the author calls the specific purpose ("I will demonstrate to my audience how to invest for the future") a thesis statement. This is a glaring error.

A thesis statement is the essence of the speech. The ultimate point you intend to make with your body of evidence, not simply your purpose for the speech. A thesis statement looks more like this " Modern communication technology, while convenient and entertaining, has ultimately handicapped our own human abilities for interpersonal communication, leaving us paradoxically together, but alone."
This is a thesis statement. I am asserting that technology affects our interpersonal abilities. This is what I'm trying to "prove". From here I can derive my points. 1) How I define communication technology. 2) How excessive usage affects our brains (with sources from my research) 3) a grim picture of our present and future interpersonal struggles. Conclusion...etc..

When students attempt to develop speeches based on an overly simplified outline, then the results (I am grading them now), are weak. A weak introduction sets the foundation for a weak speech to follow. My better speeches were those who actually included some of the missing portions of the outline in their own works.

I am going to have to correct course.

This book is overly simplified so as to be nearly useless.

Great, Useful Information
By Lisa Shea
When I had a free spot in my college schedule, I immediately signed up for a class in public speaking. I am 43 years old and run my own business - and I know I have been hindered in growth and opportunities because of my fear of speaking. Places where I could have networked or built relationships, I was nervous about speaking out. This class - and this book - were my key to improving.

I definitely give kudos to Randy Fujishin for The Natural Speaker. It is not just a book on speaking, but on becoming more comfortable with oneself in general. And really the two are quite related. The more one feels comfortable in their own skin, the more one can present oneself to others without fear.

Yes, the book provides practical advice on crafting speeches. How to lay out a speech that people remember. How to phrase the introduction to catch their attention. How to design a motivational speech that will help draw people onto your side.

He goes into the challenges of public speaking and how to handle them. How to handle that nervous feeling. How to prepare to give yourself the best chance.

And he goes beyond that. Learning to relate to others isn't just about standing at a podium in front of a hundred staring eyeballs. It's also about how to talk eloquently at a networking seminar. It's about how to make the contact and to intrigue with your conversation. It's how to build that comfort level that what you have to say is worth them hearing.

If there's a downside, it's that they seem to make you buy a supplemental online package to be able to see samples of well done videos. After all, the point of this is to learn how to speak verbally to others. It would be good to see it in action. With the ubiquity of YouTube, it would be nice if he pointed out several famous speeches for us to watch for each section, to get a sense of what he's describing. Surely there must be commonly known videos by Kennedy or MLK or other famous people that he could suggest we watch, to get a sense of how a given technique is used.

Still, those would be something most of us could find on our own, once we'd read the text and wanted to learn more.

Well recommended.

I bought it for my speech class. Very interesting information written on a very clear way. Much of the information there is about common sense but the way it is presented make it interesting. ai like that it is very practical and to the point.
