some good points

Neil Russack's book, "Animal Guides" was recommended to me by a therapist who works in dream analysis. There is much to be said for the author's book, but it takes some discipline to get through it.
After a bumpy start Russack settles down as he begins to describe his patients' dreams and he seems to be a man who speaks from a good deal of professional experience. He devotes many pages to his patients and his connections with him. There are some wonderful moments about elephants and horses and dragons....Russack comes into his fullest when describing an elderly woman who can barely speak and how she is dealing with the end of her life. There are some funny moments, too.....a colleague who measured his steps from his back office to the outside at lunchtime, leapt down stairs only to find his car ticketed each day. Therapists need therapists, as they say.
I came to the conclusion early on while reading this book that the author was more interested in talking about himself. There's nothing wrong with an autobiography but I had hoped for something
more detached from his personal life. A good textbook followed by a second book of a more personal nature would have established Russack in the public's eye. The author is not a great writer (and he needs a new editor!) but he spilled all his beans at once. Perhaps there is only one book in him.
The good thing to recommend about Neil Russack's book is that those who read it might find it easier to approach therapy. Once taboo, therapy has become an accepted life force for many of us.

Loved reading this book

This is a book with depth, knowledge, humour and soul. The author communicates the richness of animal symbolism and the complexity of meaning that it brings to the therapy and people's lives. Writing about symbolic work touches on the different layers of therapists' feeling, and Neil Russack shows such a wonderful level of thoughtfullness, warmth and relatedness. I gained lots from reading this book and it inspired me to explore animal symbolism further in myself and in my clients' work.

Animals as Shepherds

Once there was a lonely and confused young man who was an observer.
He suffered a sanitized existence - controlled and carefully measured. He early witnessed members of his family making choices, dry and uncompromising, that furnished the objective trappings of security that soothed the pain of the family history - but did not, of course, heal it. In pondering his own history of isolation, he made the assessment, "What was left out was the animal inside who hungered to experiment and explore his own relationship to friends and to the world."
Reading Animal Guides is a participation in this exploration, the further one reads, the deeper the bond established by the raw personal sharing that the author has the courage to include. The world is indeed welcomed by this once-lonely young man, now a Jungian analyst in San Francisco, as story after instructive anecdote about all manner of people is presented. Animal Guides appear to shepherd these seeking dreamers along their way - disappearing once they find pasture.
Birds fly away, deer slip quietly back into forests green, and dolphins plunge to deeper depths, perhaps to guide the next unsuspecting dreamer.
What reads as a continuous flow is yet clearly separated into the four major elements of initiation and transformation - water, earth, air and fire. Instructive descriptions of animals and the insightful guidance each provides is fluidly interwoven into Russack's personal history.
An eclectic collection of drawings and figure plates, both ancient and new, is included to provide sharpened visual enhancement and animation.
Russack clearly communicates that the reality of personal growth, of integrity building, is a total commitment.
Comfortingly, he suggests that one is never left to face one's troubles alone: guides will appear for every stage one is willing to enter.
Some souls are willing to grow and some are not - yet. Never mind, the relentless hounds of heaven will no doubt chase them a little later. They usually do.
