An Excellent Tele-History

~ This 2012 book is an updated version of Tony Bacon's excellent "Six Decades of the Fender Telecaster". Like all of his books, this one blends historical and current pictures with detailed, well-written, well-researched text to cover the history of the Esquire / Broadcaster / Nocaster / Telecaster guitars. Of course, any discussion of the history of the Telecaster has to be closely related to the history of the Fender company and it's ups and downs.
~ Interesting choice of three Telecaster models shown on the cover - the most prominent model shown on the cover is not the traditional Telecaster.
~ There is a useful detailed collector's guide at the back of the book detailing every Tele made up to the time of publication. The book contains is enough technical details to satisfy most readers, but for those who need more details about wiring etc there are other books available ,,, Telemaster A Wiring Guide For The Fender Telecaster.
~ The book discusses several of the artists who have used the guitar. One could quibble over which artists are covered in the book and which ones are omitted (notably, jazz guitarist Ed Bickert who extracted beautiful mellow sounds from his Telecaster). One could quibble of the choice of images. However, overall this is a highly recommended, entertaining and informative book.

Wonderful book with a wide scope about the best electric ...

Wonderful book with a wide scope about the best electric guitar ever made. Tony Bacon kills it with sharp detail, historical significance, comments from and about Telecaster players old and new. This is the kind of book that you shake your head in wonder at; if it were food it'd be the thickest, juiciest steak, washed down with a heady brew. I already know I'll read it again, and keep it close-by like a faithful friend. How many guitar books can you say that about?

If you know a Tony Bacon guitar book.....

....then you know what to expect. Very clean softcover layout, with alternating text and photo pages, and a pull-out here and there. There is nothing really WRONG with his books, and I do find them enjoyable to look at, but they oftentimes feel like something that I will read once, and then never really want to pick up again, at least very often. He uses too many standard photos and ads that I've seen before. I think the stark white background thing is completely played out, too. I guess you don't mess with success, though, which is why he has stuck to the formula for so long. The updated Telecaster Book is a good book if you really don't know much about Teles, though, as it has a good mix of history, technical data, and photos. This book won't cover you if you need to delve deeper into particulars, though.
